First, a tiny wallflower of a high school girl whose hopes were raised, then cruelly dashed, at the prom. Mistake.

Second, an even tinier doll, an ugly bugger, who contains the spirit of a savage hunter. Don't take the little chain off of him or the spirit comes alive and animates the doll. If it happens, hooo Nelly -- hide the steak knives. (Actual height about 10mm.)

I didn't know there was a movie.
But the novel for "I Am Legend" included a short story about a fetish doll that had its chain removed and it came to life. I bought a version when the movie was coming.
Authors name I can't remember, but the short stories in with it were excellent.
In 8 pages, the guy could create character and setting, but the story felt complete.

I don't know that it was a full length movie, really. Now that I think of it, I think it was more of a short film. It basically had to do with a woman who brought a fetish doll home, it came to life, and chased her around the house. It probably killed her, but I can't remember for sure. It was pretty cheesy though, it's probably from the 80s.

Aha! I found it. It's called Amelia and it's a short film from the Trilogy of Terror.. It's based off the short story Prey, by Richard Matheson.
And I was wrong, it's from 1975. It was still cheesy, though.
But yeah. That's what that fetish doll reminds me of.
It's also like the fetish dolls in Diablo II, of course. But really, for the most part a fetish doll is a fetish doll, I think.

Prey, yeah that's familiar.
The woman came home, chucked a coat into the room, doll fell over and chain came off, slasher story from there.
I am sure that was the inspiration from the descrip in the OP
