Seymour Hersh: “Executive Assassination Ring” Answered to Cheney, Had No Congressional Oversight
Investigative journalist Sy Hersh dropped a bombshell revelation on Monday about international killings ordered under Bush.
At a “Great Conversations” event at the University of Minnesota on Monday, legendary investigative reporter Seymour Hersh may have made a little more news than he intended by talking about new alleged instances of domestic spying by the CIA, and about an ongoing covert military operation that he called an “executive assassination ring.”
Hersh spoke with great confidence about these findings from his current reporting, which he hasn?t written about yet.
In an email exchange afterward, Hersh said that his statements were “an honest response to a question” from the event?s moderator, U of M Political Scientist Larry Jacobs and “not something I wanted to dwell about in public.”
Hersh didn?t take back the statements, which he said arise from reporting he is doing for a book, but that it might be a year or two before he has what he needs on the topic to be “effective … that is, empirical, for even the most skeptical.”
The evening of great conversation, featuring Walter Mondale and Hersh, moderated by Jacobs and titled “America?s Constitutional Crisis,” looked to be a mostly historical review of events that have tested our Constitution, by a journalist and a high government officials who had experience with many of the crises.
And it was mostly historical, and a great conversation, in which Hersh and Mondale talked about the patterns by which presidents seem to get intoxicated by executive power, frustrated by the limitations on that power from Congress and the public, drawn into improper covert actions that exceed their constitutional powers, in the belief that they can get results and will never be found out. Despite a few references to the Founding Fathers, the history was mostly recent, starting with the Vietnam War with much of it arising from the George W. Bush administration, which both men roundly denounced.
At the end of one answer by Hersh about how these things tend to happen, Jacobs asked: “And do they continue to happen to this day?”

After hearing this on the colbert report I did a bit of digging, and I found a couple of articles relating. Unfortunately it hasn't been picked up by any of the "major" news networks heavily. Whether that would give it all legitimacy I don't know. Essentially an investigative journalist "uncovered" a group of traveling hitmen under the command of Dick Cheney (thus outside of the three branches of government) who were traveling abroad and executing troublesome members of foreign states.

This all sounds fairly difficult to believe, but given Cheneys prior knowledge of U.S. torture, his early knowledge of a lack of WMDs in Iraq, his "secret closet with a man sized safe" in his office (this is real, look it up), and his refusal to comply with other branches of the government stating that his office exists outside of the major branches and thus under no jurisdiction but the president himself places this into a different context. I have no doubt that if Cheney had the constitutional right he would be sending hitmen around the world like he was sending people postcards, but the question is is this all real? Or is this just a stunt to sell books?

Given Cheneys behavior and history over the last decade I really just don't know.

I personally think its fake. That is one far fetched story, and if its real, then Cheny just got a little more ba.

What's with the article using ? instead of '. That in itself seems sort of strange. Once I could imagine was a typo, but it's so consistent. Seems like some sort of wink at the readers.

That happens when you upload an article that has parameters that people can not view. Bad fonts, weird formatting, etc. You get those a lot when you read translated articles.

We're talking about Seymour Hircsh here, so it's not going to be as simple as a fake.

Now, I think it's likely that major news providers aren't picking this up because there's a lack of evidence for very big claims, and without that evidence it's likely that we can't say for certain if this is true. While Hersch has a brilliant record of calling attention to big stories before anyone else, he's also made a few claims that haven't panned out.

How many noteable heads of state snuffed it in the last 8 years? It is my oppinion that this is the first big question that must be asked.

The articles and related media alludes to the fact that it was things like troublesome clerics and militia leaders that were being killed. Lower level political targets and semi military. No one particularly high up, since that would draw far too much attention presumably.

I don't want to belive it, but this guy has uncovered lots of other cover-ups all over the world. I've heard lots of talk how everybody pretty much followed Cheny instead of Bush and blew it off, but the it's starting to look like Bush may have been the puppet. That makes me kinda feel bad for ole George....almost.
