From
my blog (not quite enough detail to warrant full articles):
At Adepticon this year, I faced off against three opponents in three games. The games began at 1000 points and scaled up by a thousand every game thereafter.
I faced Matt from Indiana at 1000 points. He had a Warriors of Chaos army that consisted of two dire wolf units, three Marauder cavalry units, a War Altar and a Knights unit of 10. At first I was worried when I saw his display. There was a pretty dragon ogre staring down at the battlefield, but that was only included in his 3000 point army.
I thought I'd be okay until I misplaced my War Dancers. He was able to redirect a charge into them on Turn 2. Once they were out of the fight, that was it. My shooting elements did what they could, and my Scouts cowered in a corner building, but I was not able to recover since no matter what I did I would not be able to kill that block of Knights. We ended up with a draw and mike drew extra more objective and battle points for the round.
At 2000 points I faced John from (I think) Illinois. Unfortunately for me, John also has a burgeoning Wood Elf Army, so I had a hard time figuring out ways to out maneuver him.
Here's another bad situation waiting to happen. I tried to bait flee but had positioned the Scouts just close enough for the Black Knights to redirect. After eating the Scouts they easily pursued straight into my hammer unit, the Wild Riders.
I mean, really, what self-respecting Wood Elf general ever gets caught between Undead units?! I believe John used the Book to Danse these guys into combat, but I could be wrong. He held that magic item until he needed it to avoid the chance of burning it out.
John played well, but the end of the match was a huge insult to add to the injuries he caused me. All through the game he made pursuit rolls that were right on target, or magic rolls that did something exactly right. My Immune to Psychology units made fights not so bad against the Fear causing undead, but I still failed most of my rolls.
And then something like this happens.
I lose the combat, but I'm not outnumbered by Fear causers, so I roll the dice.
Insane courage? Now?! Come on!
Needless to say, it was a massacre. John got more bonus points than me, but I managed to hold onto my general and I also gained a free bonus point for catching a fleeing enemy since none of his units were able to flee.
So now I'm moving further down the tables. Down and down I go.
Connor, on Spring Break from Grand Rapids,
MI. He and his Vampire Counts kicked my butt. He had a cool Abyssal Terror conversion where his vampire stood atop a cloud of smoke, and this was also the game that was probably thirty minutes too short (according to our schedules) and the one where I actually forgot to move my whole entire army for a turn!
First of all, I screwed up my deployment. So my Treekin weren't ideal at the start of the game and I spent a turn reforming them.
Secondly, I couldn't do enough damage to ever kill his Abyssal Terror Vampire character. He redirected a nasty charge into my Hail of Doom Arrow guy who tried to snipe him the previous turn.
Thirdly, magic. I just don't know how to handle Vampire Counts magic. I had four scrolls that I managed to use in four turns. No Van Hel's here, but I managed to scroll the healing of the army spell once, and I think he was able to get it off another time with no scroll.
I wasn't sure if this was an ideal charging situation. My Glade Riders might have manged to kill just one or two ghouls on the charge, while my Wild Riders only did enough to get stuck in combat and give the Grave Guard line of sight to charge the Wild Riders.
And remember that last round where I only rolled double 1s when I didn't need it? Well, they came back to haunt me trying to dispel a Bound 3 spell.
Two dice, bound 3, 1 + 1 = whole lotta nothing.
My Wardancers did manage to kill his Varghulf. It only took like 3+ combat rounds (my rounds and his). They whittled away at him and outnumbered him, so it was good. However, they managed to finish on my combat round, which gave his proxy Black Knights the opportunity to charge
And here Connor had his two vampire characters charge out of their units to finish off the Dryads. It's a good thing they called time, otherwise I doubt I'd have much of anything left on the table.
So I had a draw and two losses and a ton of fun. I know I'm not quite up to Dakka's standards (or even Mannahin's, as he kept moving up the tables and I kept moving down. He even lent me an objective marker for the game.), but I'll probably subject myself to the same shame and humiliation next year.
