Gladiator:
I took the An'ggrath/Fateweaver build that I'd been tossing around on the Army list forum. I think the final version was:
Big Bloodthirster
Fateweaver
2x 4 Bloodcrushers w/ all upgrades
3 flamers
5 horrors w/ bolt of tzeentch & changeling
5 horrors w/ bolt of tzeentch
8 bloodletters (Required if running An'ggrath), w/ musician
11 Plaguebearers w/ icon & musician
Round 1
Versus Eldar
My opponent has:
Eldrad
Yriel
10 Warlocks w/ various tricks
10 guardians, warlock, brightlance, waveserpent w/ brightlance
11 guardians, warlock, brightlance, waveserpent w/ brightlance
2x 8 Pathfinders
3x fire prisms
The primary mission objective was to control the center of the field, you got a point for each full player turn you were in the center of the table, with secondary of victory points, and tertiary killing the enemy commander. There's nightfight all game.
This game was largely keep-away, as his tanks just danced and took pot-shots. His fortuned seers+eldrad+yriel unit did a number on one of my crusher units. I brought my flamers down in perfect position to hit the whole mess of them though, and then forgot to fire them. My opponent gloated about this a bit, and then forgot to use his psychic powers before moving his models, so karma bit him in the ass, as An'ggrath ripped Eldrad in half and then the other crusher unit proceeded to eat the warlocks. The center was pretty much contested all game though, so we tied on the primary, with me getting the other points. And, just that fast, I'm out of the running
Game 2
It's primarily an objective mission, with 5 objectives, and also the goal to get units into the enemy deployment zone and kill the most expensive enemy unit.
My opponent is Les Westmoreland, also running Daemons. He has:
Ku'Gath
Skulltaker on juggernaut
4 crushers (no upgrades)
5 flamers
15 horrors
13 bloodletters (icon here)
2x 15 plaguebearers (icons and instruments)
2 Soulgrinders
He's got a lot more troops than I do, and they can do some damage in number, but nothing to really fear. An'ggrath goes after his soul grinders, to prevent them locking up on my crushers, and he charges skulltaker+crushers into An'ggrath. That pretty much seals it, as my crushers get the counter-charge on his and it's just mopping up after that. I get the full massacre.
Game 3
My opponent here is Brian White (Player A from 40kEnthusiast's reports), also running daemons. He's running:
Fateweaver
2 khorne heralds on chariots
2x 5 crushers
1x 6 crushers w/ upgrades
2 grinders
assorted pink horrors (one w/ changeling)
He's got a big advantage on me in this matchup, as there's nothing An'ggrath can hit that's really going to do much with Fateweaver around, while he has a lot more heavy hitters than I do otherwise. He, rightfully, ignores An'ggrath entirely, and I get massacred. One amusing part of the game was the battle of changelings and fateweavers. He takes the first attempt to 'spawn' my fateweaver, and fails. I then try in return, and get changelinged - although do very little damage to my own troops. He then tries to spawn mine again, and this time my changeling is range, and he fails the
Ld test, so I have him spawn his own changeling, which works. Amusing. The next turn, my fateweaver took a wound and ran away, and that sealed it.
Game 4
And the gladiator comes to an end with my guys watching the skies. I play against Bushido Red Panda's eldar flyers. The mission is Table quarters (any unit can claim), with a secondary to be announced 45 minutes into the game.
He's got:
Eldrad
2 x 3 jetbikes
Vampire Raider (jetbikes & eldrad in here)
Phoenix
Nightwing
Wave Serpent w/ Dire Avengers in it
It's game 4, and we're both obviously way out of it now. He's using the pulsars on the vampire thing to shoot at pink horrors (?) and I make a bunker at the middle of the table, with units in each quarter and everyone still alive within fateweaver range. I watch his planes. An'ggrath gets angry cause he's got wings but isn't allowed to use them. Game ends and he's got all his flyers on the same side of the table, and I win with one quarter (three contested). A few minutes after we wrap our game up, they announce the secondary objective, and apparently neither of us stumbled into it.
I ended up in 39th place.
Team Tournament
I volunteered to help run the Team Tournament and spent Saturday answering rules questions, doing appearance judging, and returning lost warriors to their owners.
Invitational
Otherwise known as what happens when you cannot roll successfully.
My list for the invitational is:
Bloodthirster w/ might
Herald of khorne on chariot
Herald of khorne on chariot w/ unholy might
2x 5 crushers, all upgrades
3 flamers
2x 5 horrors + bolt of tzeentch
5 horrors + bolt of tzeentch + changeling
11 plaguebearers
2 soul grinders w/ phlegm
So, three more games to go.
Game One
Versus Mike Twitchell's Chaos Daemons. Mike's part of the group that won best appearance in the Team Tournament the night before, with a very nice looking Nurgle army.
He's running:
Epidemius
Great Unclean One w/ Noxious Touch, Breath of Chaos
3 Beasts of Nurgle
4x 10 plaguebearers
2x 5 plaguebearers
Soulgrinder w/ phlegm
2 Nurgle Princes w/ Hide, Noxious Touch and Gaze
The round 1 mission is really all about killing stuff. All three objectives, and all extra tactical points, are based around killing stuff in various ways (Victory points, kill points, kill troops, etc)
He takes 1st turn, and denies me a good section of the board to land on. We both get our desired wave. And then everything goes to hell. He makes more 5+ saves than I've ever pulled off in a game. I fail a lot of rolls. My chariot facing his beasts drops in a turn, after only dealing one wound. My soulgrinders both die to the only pen they take. My bloodthirster wiffs against his
GUO, and then fails all its own saves. My flamers land in position to get 16 plaguebearers under their templates and only 2 die. And, my plaguebearers, which I held back early, in order to get more use of his Tally later, come up with a '1' on their difficult terrain move and so fail to get into the combat they're needed in. I allow him to kill my last horror squads, rather than running them away, because clearly I'm not going anywhere...
Game 2
In which it is revealed that I did so poorly in game 1 that I get to play the ringer. Granted, it's a very capable player (Jeff Chua) playing, but it's still the ringer...
He's playing orks:
2x Mega Armour bosses
2x 3 mega armour nobs in battle wagons
3x 25 shoota boyz w/ rokkits &
PK nob
10 grots
15&14 lootas
It's Dawn of War, and he takes the first turn, using it to spread across as much of the table as possible, to restrict my landings. Primary mission is to be determined at the beginning of the 4th turn, with secondary as victory points and tertiary killing all opponent
HQ choices. I get the wave I asked for, and manage to only have one deep-strike mishap, as the flamers go back into reserve.
Lootas shoot the mouth off one soul grinder, and the other lootas put some hurt on a crusher unit. He moves one of the meganob/warboss units into position to assault the other grinder, while boyz are in range to assault my chariot. The soul-grinder wiffs all 4 attacks, and dies to the warbosses claw. The chariot fares better and survives to win the combat. Reserves aren't impressive, as the flamers mishap again and are sent to a corner. My crushers are able to pile into the fight with the herald, the wounded crushers go for some boyz. There's a little give&take for a while. My horrors successfully destroy one of the battle wagons, dumping their contents into the thirster's assault range, and he smashes them, but dies to loota & shoota fire the next turn. Finally we find out that the objective is to have the most scoring units within 12" of the table center. I've got 2 horror units alive that can potentially make it there, and a crusher unit that can fight off anything he brings. But, we don't have much time left (we barely finish 5 turns). I come up just short, as the second horror unit rolls a '1' for their run move (A '2' would have had them in range).
I also come up just short in the secondary, as the
VP differential for a draw is 500 points, and I've got somewhere around 400ish more. So, it's pretty much a draw game.
Game 3
Versus Joe Johnson (Jackson?)'s Eldar
Here we see Eldrad, leading his third force of the weekend to oppose my warp spawn.
Eldrad
Avatar
2x 8 Pathfinders
2x 10 Dire Avengers
8 Harlies
2 Shooty Wraithlords
2 D-cannons (support battery)
6 fire dragons
The primary goal is to get 4 objectives - each one claimed is 5 points. Then Victory Points, and then having units in each table quarter. The wrong wave (a chariot, flamers, 3 horror units, plaguebearers) comes down, and the flamers mishap away. But the rest make a good showing, with the horrors killing 7 harlies, 1 d-cannon (and one crewman). The changeling convinces the d-cannon not to fire, and he basically spends a lot of time shooting at horrors to little effect. After the initial deployment rolls, my dice decide to make up for their poor showing earlier, and my guys pretty much run rampant over his, he yields the field, and I get a massacre minus two objectives that I didn't have troops to claim.
Don't know my final ranking, but it probably isn't good

But, I did win the codicer award for the invitational, and got another bloodcrusher
