I plan on taking a trip to the movie theater today. However, I'm very torn between what I want to see.
Superbad is perhaps my favorite comedy of all time, as it captures exactly what it's like to be a teenager, while throwing in some ridiculous elements to the mix, and is filled to the brim with plenty of laugh-out-loud lines and moments (I hardly laugh aloud at anything). So I'm looking forward to Adventureland, as I have a good feeling that it will absolutely nail the 'Sucky first job' experience, being created by the same person as Superbad was. However, from what I hear, it's much lighter on the comedy (despite the inclusion of Bill Hader and Ryan Reynolds), and is more of a romance and a more serious movie altogether.
Seth Rogen is my favorite comedic actor of all time. Though Observe and Report doesn't look like it's anywhere close to on-par with any of his other movies, I have a feeling that it suffers from bad advertising, like a lot of movies do these days. From all the reviews I've read of it, you either love it or hate it, but I'm not sure what side of the fence I'd be on. On one side, I've heard that it is pointlessly violent and disgusting, completely devoid of any character development and filled with characters that hardly anyone could identify with. On the other hand, I've heard that it is a brilliantly different dark comedy, with characters that you love to hate, and even bi-polar echoes of the masterpiece that is Taxi Driver.
Both movies really suffer from gross misadvertising, and from everything I've read about both of them, whether you loved or hated the movie, the advertisements really don't give you a good idea of what you're going to see (It seems to be a common plague in 2009, as Watchmen definitely suffered the same fate). So, if anyone has seen either movie, please let me know what you thought of it. It will make my decision much easier.
