I am trying to get more in depth with my basing of my figures. Plus I want to make a few figures for display. When do you apply the figure to the base? Do you make the base, then attach and paint the figure? Or, do you complete each separately then attach them together? Or, do you attach them, then paint both?

I can't speak for others, but I paint my models on the round bases they come with using CA glue, then model and paint the base afterwards.

In some rare cases, I've done the base first then added the model - like my Wraithlord. I didn't have the right size base and wanted it to be very scenic so I had to make one and decorate it separately.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

It depends on the model and the base I'm doing. For normal trooper models I paint the model attached to the base first and then do the base after.

For characters like the GMCA below, I paint the fig separately and then make the base and paint it separately. The fig is then pinned to the finished base. That way I can model the bases to be more complex and wont run into trouble with painting either.
