Hi,
Here's my tau list, using the models I have. I changed the layout of the crisis suits and broadsides after getting some feedback last time, and also where I put the drones. Now there's a whole bunch with the stealth suits. What do you think?
Commander Shas'o- 293
AFP, CIB, Iridium Armor, HW Multitracker, 2 Shield Drones
2 Bodyguards
Missile Pods, Twin Linked Burst Cannons, HW Multi-Trackers
Ethereal- 50
3 Fireknives- 221
2 Shield drones
3 Fireknives- 221
2 Shield drones
6 Stealthsuits- 300
12 Gun Drones
12 Fire Warriors- 120
12 Fire Warriors- 120
12 Fire Warriors- 120
12 Fire Warriors- 120
8 Pathfinders- 216
Devilfish- Smart Missile System, Multi-Tracker, Disruption Pod, Targeting Array
2 Piranhas- 150
Fusion Blasters, Disruption Pods, Targeting Arrays
1 Piranha- 75
Fusion Blaster, Disruption Pod, Targeting Array
Hammerhead- 180
Railgun, Smart Missile System, Multi-Tracker, Disruption Pod, Targeting Array, Target Lock
2 Broadsides- 195
Advanced Stabilisation Systems, 2 Shield Drones
1 Broadside- 115
Advanced Stabilisation System, 2 Shield Drones
Total- 2496
(Edited- removed flamer on commander)
What do you think? What's missing (besides more devilfish, since I don't have the models) and could be improved upon using the models I have? Thanks!

Ok seriously, Im stealing your stealth idea... that is HILARIOUS!!! ohs, I want to use that But anyways, back to the list, looks alright, may need knives on the fire warriors, and unless you hate kroot you may want to throw in a big group in there for counter charge, but otherwise I like... I would also see if you could lose the single broad, and throw in another hammerhead. well, there's my 2 cents

Armies I play:
-5000 pts
-2500 pts
Mechanicus -1850 pts |

While I understand fitting things in point wise with the flamer, i don't know why you would want one of your best units to be moving slowly and fire a short range weapon. It doesn't completely work out. CIB is your own personal prefference, (I just fireknive everything) and if it works and you like it then there's no reason to change. If you are intentionally making a specific range of HQ, I would specialize more. For example if you're hoping to get into lower range and blast I would get rid of the missle pods for plasma rifles and and take out the flamer for even more plasma rifles. While the iridium armor is cool, I personally like having more mobility then having protection, especially since this is a guy you want to get into mid range shooty combat.
Do you have a group that you play with (either friends or game place or both?). I only ask because a lot of people base their lists on the play group. You defintley have a good amount of units to work with but I was wondering why you went with Pathfinders for example.

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback!
gameandwatch- Thanks I got the stealth suit idea from another list I saw posted on warseer. Good point on the kroot/hammerhead... if I get the models I'll probably make that change. Right now I couldn't find the points for knives on the FW, it'd be 60 points to get knives for all 4 squads, and the ethereal is 50 points, so I wanted to try using him to see if he can help them stick around. If not I may drop him for some knives.
maxownsworld- You're right, I'll adjust that. Just couldn't find somewhere to put 4 points, and I don't like odd numbers . I haven't yet tried out the AFB/ CIB combination. Right now I have the commander modelled as AFB/plasma gun, which doesn't seem like an optimal combination. The CIB looks awesome so I thought I'd try it out too, and it's also cheaper. You're not the first to recommend dropping the iridium armor... what would you use the points for if I did?
I was thinking of the HQ unit as anti-horde from mid-range. I like the TL Burst Cannons on the bodyguard, but if not missile pods with it, what would you suggest?
I chose the pathfinders for their markerlights, so I can light up somebody really bad? I know it's a lot of eggs in one basket, I have no other markerlights in the list. Any suggestions on that?
I'm going to try my second game with tau on Saturday with a group we're just starting (made up of dakka members!), but I like to use the same list all the time and have it be for all-comers. I traded armies recently so I have all the models, just trying to figure out how to convert / change everything around to how I like it so I can get busy painting

first of how i want to play Tau is the ninja approach so i'm not a big fan of this setup.. but here's what i think..
Commander Shas'o- 293
AFP, CIB, Iridium Armor, HW Multitracker, 2 Shield Drones
2 Bodyguards
Missile Pods, Twin Linked Burst Cannons, HW Multi-Trackers
switch to 1 HQ + Bodyguard and no drones so these guys never run away
Ethereal- 50
lose this guy and get another Shas'o with bodyguard instead for more firepower, any good player will do all that they can to take this guy out and at this amount of points player can handle single targets in one way or another, giving opponent more options to kill gives you more units alive.
3 Fireknives- 221
2 Shield drones
3 Fireknives- 221
2 Shield drones
remove the drones and just use the JSJ tactic and you should have no trouble, might consider using an hammerhead as an mobile bunker and go aggressive.
6 Stealthsuits- 300
12 Gun Drones
all good here these can do some serius dmg to heavy weapons teams..
12 Fire Warriors- 120
12 Fire Warriors- 120
12 Fire Warriors- 120
12 Fire Warriors- 120
NEED warfishes for each group if possible low on points then cut an FW group or 2 out, and you need 1-2 kroot groups with unit of 10kroot + 10 dogs... keep those melee out of u'r way with cheap meat shields..
8 Pathfinders- 216
Devilfish- Smart Missile System, Multi-Tracker, Disruption Pod, Targeting Array
all good here to light stuff up but this is good to kill units but less good at taking care of multiply threats..
2 Piranhas- 150
Fusion Blasters, Disruption Pods, Targeting Arrays
1 Piranha- 75
Fusion Blaster, Disruption Pod, Targeting Array
the single piranha is an easy killpoint...
Hammerhead- 180
Railgun, Smart Missile System, Multi-Tracker, Disruption Pod, Targeting Array, Target Lock
single tank that has target lock? and targetting array is allready in the tank so can't add another..
2 Broadsides- 195
Advanced Stabilisation Systems, 2 Shield Drones
1 Broadside- 115
Advanced Stabilisation System, 2 Shield Drones
broadsides is very good att killing armor stuff but consider having another hammerhead for more firepower instead of the lonely broadside.. pieplate is very good..
hope this helps you a little...
but i would still recomend ninja style but not everyone likes it so

By Ninja style do you mean JSJ with the suits? I thought they'd be dying pretty easily, even with a 4+ cover save from hiding behind something, without their drones.
So you'd drop the drones from every unit of crisis suits, even the HQ?
I just listed targetting array on the hammerhead, but didn't pay extra for it since it's included, I put on a target lock so the smart missile system could shoot elsewhere. Is that a waste?
I'm really looking for that kind of advice... how to better configure the units that I already own, rather than buying a bunch of devilfish. I am aware that they are desirable and will probably spring for some in the future

Ninja Tau is a tactic involving reserving almost all of your army, then using Pathfinders and the Special Issue Wargear that lets you play with reserves rolls in order to pick which unit you want each turn. Or something like that, there's a big thread about it in the Tactics area I think.

JSJ with this army size you put them behind u'r tanks for LoS blocking so they can't be hit or use some other terrain to put them out of LoS otherwise that cover save is very nice..
my view is to rather field more guns then put more protection on stuff that should be able to go an hide but if you want protection on HQ just give him some bodyguards and you got some more wounds.. i use the ninja tactic so i just about only deploy my HQ or shas'vre with some meatshields to keep him alive with 2 shield drones for 2 rounds minimum then i get to choose where to deploy my army for most dmg and with him all spread out not knowing where i'll come on board..
leave anti tank to Broadsides and let hammerhead have burstcannons and put an pie plate in some assault group with 6 shots from u'r burst cannons should slow them down so you can focus on other stuff then u'r guys getting into melee..
warfishes are very good to have around to do aggressive moves with JSJ so that is nice.. but from my view of current stuff you might be up to most times is not much of shooty army´s(might be different where you are) so most people want to get into close combat and do that with some very nice transports one trick is to put drones infront of u'r like 3 broadsides and use them for shields for broadsides and use broadsides with target lock and blast those transports away...
but i realy recommend looking at what options an ninja army gives you...

Get rid of the lowly broad side and pirahna. Like earlier have another Hammerhead and some Kroot. You also badly need a Devilfish transport for the fire warriors, except for that, awesome!

Hi,
So your comments and another test game have convinced me that I don't want iridium armor after all . Better to have the guaranteed 6" jump back...
I took the points and put it into the lonely broadside (which I know you all wanted me to drop) to make it WYSIWYG (it'd modelled with TL plasma rifles) and into a blacksun filter for it and the hammerhead.
I looked into ninja tau but I don't have the models for it! So I'll have to stick to gunline tau for now. I did play a 1000 point game (drew the KP only mission) and narrowly won, so that was encouraging

Personally i like this list i would try for some devil fishes for you're troops. There nothing more of a piss of then gunning down assault troops and then right before they assault you climb in the devil fish and fly away and shoot them again.

That sounds like a good plan
I am definitely going to add more devilfish when I get the models. For now, I am thinking that the one squad I have with pulse carbines will go in the pathfinder's devilfish. I've heard that the rifles are better for rapid-fire up close, but I'm going to give ti a go and see
The other three squads all have pulse rifles.

I play a similar commander to this, with a similar bodyguard.
Though is this configuration not illegal? I believe you must fill three hardpoints on the unit? Whats the third? (And don't say a drone controller)
You should make him a Shas' el and give him a Targetting Array, it'll get you some extra points to play with.
Also, it's my opinion that Ethereals and Massed Firewarriors are silly, and a liability. Though you probably don't have the available models to cut them down and jam them into Fish.
Piranhas are good, Railheads are great, Broadsides are AMAZING, but not really against hordes of infantry, though I don't know what you'll be playing.

That ethereal is all alone, he is a sitting duck.
He is going to die turn 1, and a full half of your army if going to flee off the board.
Why even take him? You'd be better off just running a 2450 army than a 2500 with an ethereal.
