Subject: First few games with the new Guard Codex

Okay, so I got some games in with my guard. Played Eldar(2000) and Tau(1900)
First game with the new dex I played real bad against Eldar, 2 objectives; dawn of warl; big hill in the middle blocking all line of sight, didn't realize that medusas aren't barrage, can't shoot over stuff so they did nothing all game. Second thing that is not good for having 100% vehicles is deploying, especially in dawn of war. There is no where to really move around. Third, LoS really kills the whole Lumbering Behemoth special rule because you never get many chances to shoot every single gun. It ended up I barely got to shoot very many guns at a bum rushing eldar army, they easily just got too up in my face and killed my only 2 scoring units. (I used 2 veteran squads in chims, 3 LRMBTs, 2 Demolishers, 3 Medusas, 1 HQ w/ Ordnance master w/Straken in chimera. All the squads had 2 meltas and 1 plasma.)
I want to play him again now that I have played with them and know all the new stuff the guard got.
Second game, [2 Vet squads in chims, 3 LRMBTs w/Pask, 2 Demolishers, 2x Bassies w/ Medusa, Sentinel w/ lascannonand 1 HQ w/ordnance master in chim. All the squads had 2 meltas and 1 plasma.)
3 objectives; table corners deployment; heavy jungle terrain.
Wow, what a win. He had 2 hammerheads and a broadside team and they did jack. They went first, either missed, hit and shook, or were lost to cover. My first turn, both hammerheads become worthless, Medusa and bassies take out the broadsides' shield drones and one suit. 2nd turn, Demolishers make it over the hill and decimate the 2 remaining broadsides. Game drags on, crisis suits try to do something to side armor with missles. Tanks advance over their 2nd objective, claiming half of the board and consuming everything. Major victory, not very exciting with tau BS. In the end, I lost one basilisk to a failed cover save.
Really went against what I had expected, even with the squad rules about immobilization. The eldar proved that a fast army can deal a major amount of damage, especially when using a bunch of small squads, forcing the squads to shoot at the same squad. To my defence, I had taken a 95 pt special character that did diddly crap while sitting with the master of ordnance and the medusas.
The Tau truly cowered against the amount of tanks. They may have some of the best guns in the game, but when confronted with 12 vehicles, an army can become overwhelmed. Nothing really could have stopped the advance after the tanks broke the railguns. 3x3xsquads of broadsides may seem scary but from talking to the Tau players at the store, in a tourny setting the most any of them would ever take is 1 squad.
So yeah... just wanted to tell about some complications and a major victory I had with the new codex.

Thank you for the post. You certainly overwhelmed the Tau with all this armor...
But i think your list would heve a problem against assaulters.
Still well done you managed to outshoot and terrify the Tau with armor!
The reign of Railguns is over!

I played against all-infantry new Guard with my Eldar today. It was 1500 points, but I didn't really get to test much out because I tank-shocked 1/3 of his army off the board on my second turn and he gave up. It was kind of a disappointment, but we did talk about how to make guard less vulnerable to morale after the "game."

It might just be me, but I feel you are focusing way to much on killing your opponent, instead of the mission objectives. Two troops choices isn't enough in a 2000 points mission, especially if they are only 10 men with a 5+ armour save.

agreed...
even though having enough dakka to take out your opps. troops can work, your own troops need to survive to sit on objectives...

Isn't it a little early to realy try playing witht the new rules. Myself i would prefer to have more than rumours, like maybe a paperback codex.

Most stores should already have a preview copy of the codex. He might be a store owner or was allowed to see it by one.

I'm unsurprised at the results of your eldar fight. That's the problem with having so many guy-killing-tanks. Might I suggest a Hydra battery next time....?
Willyd: I think mech (or its absence) is going to become an important aspect of IG lists. Either run everything in vehicles, or run no vehicles. The first gives your opponent no guys to shoot at, the second makes losing men irrelevant.

I personally think that all-mech is much stronger than non-mech.
I had one wave serpent that was able to run a command squad, two line squads, and a heavy weapons squad off the board without firing a single shot.
Maugan Ra consistently destroys an entire heavy weapons squad no matter what kind of cover its in, so I was able to easily take out his units that were major threats to my Wraith Lords which were bearing down on his lines.
If he'd just had a couple of chimeras he wouldn't have been as vulnerable.

Good observations. I'd rather play mech than paint 300 guardsmen regardless, but those sorts of glaring weaknesses are certainly best avoided.

There's only one way to do that. Should be obvious :-) However, one successful death or glory and that one wave serpent gets dropped.

Yeah, it was a tank shock, and he tried to DoG with a lascannon or two, but vehicles are hard to stop in 5th ed. Before we started playing, I thought to myself that their biggest weakness is morale, and exploited it during the game.

Good discussion, and I have to agree with sourclams on running either all mech or all non-mech. After that, have to go with willydstyle, all tanks is going to be much harder for people to cope with. In my defense, I am use to playing with the Armored Company codex (from gw site) and only had ~30 models to play with so I couldn't play with much. What would you take out for more troops in chimeras? Maybe one of the LRMBTs?
