With the prevalence of Vets in the new guard list, im interested in how people have created veterans in the past. Im thinking for simplicity i might just paint a single shoulder pad a different color to signify rank, but i thought id get some other ideas

The Cadian plastics mix well with the Empire Militia. Add in a few heads from other sources (Catachan, Sentinel) & finish with SM scout shotguns.

in one army, I used REALLY old plastic guard, but used catachan arms for vets, to make them look a bit more gung ho.....
In my empire militia IG army, I used tallarns with head swaps, to give them camo cloaks...

nice conversions
I use anything i can get my grubby hands on, plasma weapons, SM weapons, anything really and you can allways swap parts with catachans, to make em look stronger, i remember i guy who had veterans with catachan arms, cadian stomachs and used greenstuff to make sleves, it make em look not so muscluar and made em look really good, so they didn;t have the deathworld look

I thought about using catachan heads, which would look nice, except i couldnt get the huge catachan necks to fit well with the cadian body. Perhaps ill try again, but it just looked odd. I think im going to use the colored shoulder pads as well as new heads, Definitely need to lose the helmets everyone knows that the more powerful you are in 40k the less likely you are to wear a helmet.

For my basic vets, I bit ordered cadian heads with googles, put patches and grenades on their shoulder pads, and gave them the elysian drop troop grav chutes.
Then I kinda went overboard and gave a couple mordheim heads.

When I saw the title, I swear, I read it " IG Vegetarians"
Anyways, I recommend the ForgeWorld cadian vets to be honest, for bits. The heads and shotguns and plasma pistol and other extra bits are just to good to pass up....and 14 USD... they are a good deal for adding detail to your vets. Asides that, special gear like custom armor or amazing poses really are not necessary. A simple extra item or two, a forge world bit here and there, and some unique head/color scheme work is enough to do the job.
