Oooooh, I'm a sucker for awesome modeling projects like that. I'll have to pick it up. Probably nothing you couldn't find in a model train magazine of some variety, but even so. Will be especially cool if there are some scenarios or scenario ideas included...

Awesomeness, and perhaps cover... but mostly awesomeness.

Why model vehicle interiors or add ipods to Squiggoths?

Why model at all? You could use counters!

Awesomeness is definitely a function.

Exactly.

In reality, that draw-bridge could never hold the weight of a warjack.

The "I" beams under the bridge are in scale w24 x 60 and there are a bucket ton of them. The primary support members for the bridge are w48 x 120.

I did my homework. The bridge WOULD support a steam jack or two. Perhaps not 5 though. They only weigh 12 tons after all. This was built in scale and followed design chriteria that would support semi trailers which have GVW of over 90,000 lbs. A fair amount more then a single steam jack at 24000 lbs.

As for why does it work? They wanted it to...

You worked out all that from the video?

Nice bridge, I'll be looking forward to reading about it in NQ#24

If you really want me to sure.
Seems a bit silly to be honest.

This place sure has changed from when it was owned by the Wakelins up in NH.

Why does someone put lights in the eyes of amodel or light up an interior of their vehicle? Why does someone put smoke out of a Missile Launcher? Why do model train advocates do everything possible to make their dioramas look real? Because they can and because other people like to go "oooooh!!" "aaaaah" "Wow, that pretty slick. How'd you do it?"

We do it because we think it looks cool and we hope others think it looks cool, but mainly because we think it looks cool.

Nice to see someone that really did their homework. did you also take into consideration the weight of the materials used to top the bridge? Or is this a completely metal structure with no concrete etc?

Bug did you ever end up moving up to Central New York? I saw your post on our forums (syracusegamers) 6 months ago or so and got all excited that we might be encountering some real terrain talent.

Edit: Oh and cool bridge by the way. Props for making the front page of the PP site, particularly when a new model has like a 50/50 shot of getting up there!

Nope. Unfortunately the job disappeared. I'm still in Orlando. :(

I was really surprised to see it make it up there actually. I don't think they have ever put a terrain piece up on the home page before.

@ two_heads_talking: The deck is made from plastruct diamond plate so it's entirely "metal" in construction. There is actually quite a bit of brass in the piece. The entire armature for the gears is made out of brass box tube and round tube that is soldered together.

All told the project probably took about 350 hours to complete. The bridge itself I made in an evening though. Casting the gears and getting the mechanics function was where the most time was invested.

Thankfully, there are a bunch of other techniques that will be useful for a lot of people to get some great effects really quickly that can be adapted to many different applications.

One fun thing to keep in mind. Miscro Switches do not like cyanoacrilate glue at all. It oxidizes the contacts and causes them to cease functioning. (That took three rebuilds to discover...)
