Ok, so after playing LOTR Conquest online (only the demo of course) I've decided I want to try out Gondor sometime.

Any tips on purchases?

The Strategy Battle Game (original skirmish game) OR War of the Ring (movement tray massed battles)?

Erm, The SBG.

For massed battles, Fantasy is fine for me.

Ok, cool. To start, I'd purchase the plastics. What's great is the variety of plastics Gondor gets.

I'd suggest:
2x Warriors of Minas Tirith
1x Knights of Minas Tirith
1x Rangers of Middle Earth
Right there, its 100 USD and gets you 700 points, which will give you a lot of versaility in building armies.

Then add in Hero(es) of choice, generic captains, Faramir, Boromir would all be some recommendations.
[Generic captains are very cost effective; Faramir is a cheap upgraded Captain, but is a little lower on defense; Boromir is one of the best heroes in the game, but he's pretty expensive]

Later on, you can add in some of the metal models (Fountain court, citadel guard, etc.)

If your juust starting the game all you need is 1 pack of warriors, nights and a hero, that simple and than later on get the rangers and some metal models

my advise would be to stick to wariors of minas tirth ranger of gondor and nights. For heros Boimir,Aragon or Fairmir.There is so mutch to choose from for gondor it can get expensive if you dont limit yourself to what your going to use.
