Those look really good,I've got a lot of "gubbins" and plasticard laying about,maybe I'll try to make a few like yours.
One question,did you use plasticard as the foundation for the bases?

Nope. I used Masonite, or MDF (Medium Fiber Density) board. It's the same stuff as that peg board with all the holes that you sometimes see in stores or in people's garages with tools hanging on them. The MDF board in these pics is about 3/16" thick.

You can get a 4'x4' sheet at Home Depot for about $5-8 USD. I use it for all my craters, barricades, and building bases.

Good suggestion on the extra mud stuff. After a solid week of building then paining, I was getting pretty sick of them, to be honest. I suppose I will go back over them in due time and flesh them out a bit better. Right after I :

Finish my 2 squads of Dire Avengers.
Finish my 4 Wave Serpents.
Re-cast my Prism Cannons for my 5 Fire Prisms.
Build my 5 Fire Prisms.
Finish my 5 Fire Prisms.
Paint my Cobra Mk.II
Assemble my newest 48 Guardians still in bits.
Paint my newly assembled 48 Guardians.
Finish my Meditation Garden for my Apoc. terrain collection.
Re-work my road system for my Apoc. terrain.
Build my colossal Ministorum building for my Apoc. terrain.
Paint it.

...and the myriad of other things that pop into my mind between now and then.
