Is there a rule against this?

This came up today when a unit of skinks moved and only half were in short range meaning if they double tapped then only half would benefit from poison as the ones in long range would need 7's. The guy proceeded to double tap half and single shot the other half. I was told by a more experienced player that you had to pick one mode of shooting for your unit. Is this true? Or can you divide your unit up, based on the previous example?

The entire unit MUST fire with multiple shots or not. It's in the rules for multiple shots...
