Anyone have any luck with Vespid, Piranhas or Sniper Teams in games around 750pts?

Pirhana's seem like they'd be an ok value at that level, less anti tank for them to worry about (presumably) and you get a free unit of drones out of it.

The other two are unfortunately not ever really any good

I can see pirhanas only of usein really small games, where theresless anti tank, or large games, where theres too much other armour to worry about.

Idguess theyd work well in 1500pt+ railheadlists, and 500-750pts.

What do you all think about running some Vespid to hunt down Nobs or Deffkoptas? Add some markerlights, boost the Stingwing's BS and in theory up their chance to hit, the S5 AP3 seems like a decent bet, right?

Anyone??

Gun drones are more mobile and can generate more hits at longer range more easily (twin linking benefits more from marker lights), well not being so blisteringly easy to kill.

I've been caught using vespid before. usually they are the last unit that makes it into my 1750 ninja lists.

The idea with them is that they'll deep strike late game (more accurately thanks to pathfinder devilfish) and they will shoot anything that falls out of a transport that was killed by my also deep striking fusion suits.

They tend to do more, 'get in cover, don't die, block the objective' Which gun drones might be able to do for cheaper. Although T4, 4+ cover and leadership 9 is a lot tougher to crack than the wimpy gun drones.

I haven't really used piranhas yet. But on paper they don't seem too bad of a unit. You'll want a large unit of them, so that the KP cough up isn't too easy.

Sniper teams were awesome until everyone started going mechanized, or became horde orks. I think they'd be pretty hard to use in a take on all comers list.

Im glad to hear that there's some potential for these units! It encourages me to not throw them in a deep dark box, forever cast from the light. lol (getting too prolific there).
Anyways, Shep!
What's your build out for the Crisis team that deepstrikes in with the Stingwings and how many of them are in the squad? (the Suits and the Stingwings)

Thanks!

I've used all 3 so...

Pirhana: I'm a recent convert, but I love piranhas. A pair of them can do an amazing job of screening for a mechanized list, and they draw fire like crazy, and they kill tanks, which opens up my railheads to do what I want them to do: put down pie plates and burt cannon fire everywhere. They seem useless vs. horde armies until you remember that you can jam flechettes on em to draw charges. They are kind of a liability in kill point missions, however, the way they take fire and anti-tank duties off your railheads is pretty amazing.

Vespids: Oh, man, they suck, and suck bad. the one nice thing is that they have skilled rider and can be dropped into area terrain and probably live. but it's still a 16 point model with a 5+ save. Do the math.

SDT: they're ok. not great, not bad, but really, with so many mech armies around, they aren't really all that spectaular. the best use of them is as starting bait for ninja tau lists.

...Rule 37. There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'time to reload.'

If you don't mind the fragility, a piranha with fusion and two seekers is pretty much all the anti-tank you could need in that small a game; assuming of course you're not using KP (otherwise the thing's worth 2 unless you're REALLY lucky about the drones dying in the vehicle's explosion). Vespid are no good at all: Vet guardsmen with hellguns, except assault 1 instead of rapid-fire, a little stronger (but less shots), lower BS, a little faster but worse in melee and with easily annihilated leadership. Just as expensive too.

Sniper teams are okay; their main problem being their FOC position when trying to fit them in larger games.

crisis suits i use

2x crisis suit, 2x twin link fusion, 2x targeting array, 1x shas'vre upgrade.

Gives me 2 different wound buckets and majority WS3.

Stingwings, i use 10. Be very careful about using them outside of cover.

I personally find that I leave out vespid in a smaller game unless im versing SM or necrons, as they're a waste of points. In larger games, they become usefull bait to distract enemy fire, especially against guard.

Pirahna, I almost always use it regardless of who im versing. I only have one, but it more than does its job, easily supporting a unit in a devilfish, ramming other vehichles (s9 hits) and if the vehicle is alive still, seeker missile's get fired. For around 80-100 points, I find it invaluable.

And SNT, I use 2. I find them great for picking of at weaker units, low armor, or squads of 3+ saves. And in smaller games, tau outnumber most players and having the snipers nocking off 2-4 a turn it can really hurt

Current armies: Chaos marines 1800pts
