See, you're not in an appropriately Imperial mindset. The most important concern of any Imperial Citizen is whether or not their soul will be accepted by the Emperor upon their death. Imperial Service helps ensure that they will be welcomed into His spirit, and not cast into the Warp.
Surviving a battle just means that you need to prepare for the next one. The motto of the IG (visible on the side binding of the last two IG codecies) is "Honor and duty." Which takes on a new meaning when you remember that "Only in death does duty end."
