Ive heard about a list or codex for kroot mercenaries but i cant seem to find it anywhere. I originally played the tau but they really didnt fit my style. Then i heard about the kroot mercs and wanted to try it.
If you have any information on them let me know . I found 1 codex but it seems to be written by a player so i cant tell whats legal and whats fluff from here. Any help is greatly appreciated .

Kroot Mercs is a fun themed army, but.... just so that you know they are a horrible army, I beleive they are the lowest tier army in the game.
Most of what is in the kroot merc ruleset, is pretty much the kroot entry in the current tau empire codex. Add in a few eviscerators for the shapers, a few talisman items that seem stolen from the dark eldar, and some kroot with wings and that sums it up. Oddly enough, I think its somewhat competative against Orks.
Maybe you can sum up what makes your style and see what people here think is your best fit. I like small to medium sized armies of elite models, with a shooty element, something sneaky and that aren't imperial, so tau, eldar and oddly enough even chaos fits me the best.

The list is also in Chapter Approved 2004, which might be easier to find than the original White Dwarf. I've never really looked at it that closely. Is it "unofficial" just because it doesn't have its own book, or was it cheesy?

It was just unofficial, definately not cheesy.

Have a look at the PDF's available at Kompletely Kroot, there's a new version of the Kroot Codex there which has been updated by the KK forum members to work under 5th edition rules and stays very true to Andy Hoare's original design (from WD266). I've always loved Mercenary themed armies, and thought the Kroot models were awesome back in my Tau days, so I'm working on an army of my own right now and have already gotten my local tournament organizer to approve their usage since they were legal in last year's 'Ard Boyz, and apparently somebody wants to see my Orks put away for a while.
Make sure check with your local gaming group and tournament organizers first to make sure they're cool with the army before doing anything major, as GW is no longer supporting the Chapter Approved list, or anything other than the one Apoc datasheet and the Tau codex entry.
