Hi everyone,
First, I hope this is in the right place. I'm modding a small White Panthers force, and want some help from people who know more fluff than I. There isn't much info on White Panthers as far as I can see - they're an offshoot from Ultramarines, they're conventional in chapter structure, they're zealous (disagreements with inquisitors) in their persecution of the Emperor's enemies.
I see my guys fighting tyranids a lot, as the Ultramarines seem to, and maybe doing some down and dirty close combat to get the xenos at their own game - lightning claws, and lots of em. Are lightning claws actually good wargear for this sort of force? I just like them as they're quite appropriate to panthers!
In my mind's eye, I have them as a fast attack force, with a bias towards close combat bladed weapons. I'm thinking a commander unit, a close combat termie squad with lightning claws (and maybe pelts like Space Wolves, but with panthers), a venerable dread, an assault squad (can they have lightning claws? Maybe i'll have to give them swords instead), and a basic tac squad. I'm thinking the elites might get some unorthodox decoration like pelts etc, or something else (suggestions?) panther-ish.

Ideas and advice is welcome, especially about which units are allowed lightning claws.

Firstly for your army, use a converted 'counts as' Shrike. IMO would be perfectly suited to your army.

Second... http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Panthers

Third, use lightning claws whenever the codex allows I guess, if they are ultrasmurf offshoots, they will likely adhere to the codex rigidly.

Thanks guys!

I was definitely planning on having a shrike figure in my assault squad. Am I right in thinking veteran assaut squads can have power weapons? In which case I can give them all a lightning claw to go with their pistol?

I'm also thinking an assault terminator squad with a chaplain in termie armour for the smashing of enemy CC elites.

Where does the codex allow lightning claws exactly? SOrry to be a pain and ask this, but I have no rulebooks or codices anymore, as I only paint and model now

Seem like a bunch of stressheads.

Lots of flamers, and really indiscriminate weapons will work well with them. artillery, thunderhammers, claws.

Can anyone answer my LC question? I know this isn't really the section that deals with rules etc. but you know... since i'm here...

Care to answer my question about who the White Panthers are? BTW, Ultramarine successor chapters can be non codex.

As for LCs:
Assault terminators can have a pair of LCs (can't have just one)
Shooty terminators can replace their power fists with chainfists but aren't allowed LCs

The following all replace their chainswords (or power swords) and /or bolt pistols with LCs

Any assault or tactical squad sergeant may have a LC or a pair of them.
Vanguard veterans (can take jump packs) veterans can have a pair or just one.
Sternguard veterans: only the sergeant but he can have one or a pair
Command squad veterans: any veteran may have one or a pair of LCs
Captain can have one or a pair
Chapter Master can have one or a pair

Librarians and all other groups not mentioned don't get them.

Awesome, very helpful reply, thanks mate.

As for who they are - I discovered them when I saw a paint scheme in an old white dwarf. All the info I know about them comes from that link posted above
