Okay thinking of starting a Rohan army that's all cavalry. Any Ideas on this force? Looking at the list for Rohan I realize they have no magic so some allies are a must for that. I was thinking of taking either Gandolf or Elrond as just the epic hero or should I take a unit from the Gondor list for Gandolf or an Elven unit to work with Elrond? any tips on what people might think would be a good starting point as I have no models for this game yet and am not sure I want to send off to GW for the boxed set they have for Rohan up on their website as its $200 dollers.

I dunno man. I think cav is a tough row to hoe in WOTR. Each stand of Cav attacks twice, and has 2 wounds at resilience 2, instead of attacking 8 times and having 8 wounds at resilience one. You are paying about the same amount for both. The only thing the cav really get is movement distance and the good charge rules. Make sure that's worth it for you.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Just keep in mind that in 1/3 of the scenarios (the High Ground), infantry have priority claiming the objective. If you have an all cav army, and have a unit within 3" of the objective, and your opponent has an infantry unit within 3", he wins. Just something to consider.

Oh, sorry, didn't answer the question in my rush to criticize. Magic is less crucial in this game than in others, its not fantasy. A magic heavy army gets magic'd just as hard as a magic light one, magic D is all about the Heroes.

That said, allied wizards never hurt anything. They are subtle, and quick to anger.

The Rohan box is definitely a great place to start, particularly in terms of cost. I'm not sure you need an Elf unit for Elrond or a Gondor unit for Gandalf, either can join and lead Rohan formations just fine. I do like Elf units in general (and dwarf units), however, as they have useful special rules that can't be easily replicated.

It seems like they've really tried to build a rock-paper-scissors effect with monsters-cav-infantry. Granted, good really doesn't have monsters (ents), but I think you need some mix of cav and infantry in a Rohan force.

Haven't played enough to know how important magic is, but if it's like LotR, you don't need a wizard. Include them if you want, but not necessary.

2 boxes of warriors of rohan and 2 boxes of riders of rohan give you a 500 point list for $100.

you can make two formations of three companies (cavalry), one formation of four comapny milita, and one formation of two company bowmen. Upgrade with a couple of captians and you have a nice force to start.

take care
