Monday night, I met up with a fellow Dakka-ite - dmoe86.. Aka Dave. Met at the local FLGS (Guardtower in Columbus, OH) on their 40K Monday night.
Dave is a (self confessed) long-time 40k person playing in the 2nd and 3rd ed era... with a well painted SM force from those days. End of 3rd and beginning of 4th, he stopped playing. With the advent of 5th ed, and amazing plastics including the AoBR set, he wanted to try out the new rulesets.
He contacted me, we talked thru email, and set up a 600-ish point game, based on models he had.. I ran up an army list for him, and before the game we talked about what each of his units could and could not do, including how transports now worked, and the new Assault phase, as well as the special rules for each weapon type. Also discussed new Line of Sight targeting rules.
Dave's Purple Marines-
Captain - Iron Halo, Plasma Pistol, Power Axe
Tac Squad - 10 marines, Missile Launcher, Flamer, Sarge with CCW/BP
Tac Squad - 10 Marines, Heavy Bolter, Flamer, Sarge with Bolter, riding around in a Rhino
Scout Squad with CCW/BP combo.
total - 590 ish
Porkuslime's Orkishness
Warboss, Heavy Armor, PK, Slugga
5 Nobz - 1 with Power Klaw, one with CombiScorcha
Trukk for these guys
Boyz Mob - 20 Boyz, 17 with Choppa/Slugga, 2 with Rokkits, 1 Nob with PK
3 Rokkit Deffcoptas.
Pretty much the AoBR Orks, with slight upgrades and a Trukk. total - 580-ish
Small game, thus set up on a 4x4 board instead of the full 4x6.
Decent terrain.. small woods on the west side of the board, ruins in the NW corner, large rocky outcropping in the center and NE corner, large woods in the SW corner.
Orks deployed in the south, Marines in the north.
Mission - Capture and Control.. Marine objective in the western woods, Ork Objective just south of the NE rocks. Both about 24" each side.
Deployment - Pitched Battle.
Marines won the role to set up first, and go first. He deployed the non-Rhino Tac squad in the gap between the ruins and the rocks on the north, with his scouts in the ruins themselves, about 12 inches from the SM objective in the woods.
Orks deployed the Boyz in the SW woods, and the Trukk with the Nobz + Warboss directly south of the middle rockpile.
Deffcoptas and SM Rhino and Tactical Squad kept as reserves.
SM Scouts infiltrated closer to the SM objective.
Orks tried to seize initiative and failed.
SM turn 1.
Scouts continued into the woods, and made it almost to the SM objective. Did not shoot at Boyz, out of range. Captain and Tactical Squad repositioned itself a bit closer, after checking to see if they had line-of-sight to the Trukk.. which they didn't .. so, no SM shooting. Captain is NOT attached to the squad.
Ork Turn 1.
Boyz amble thru the woods, getting to the edge. Decide not to run, fire sluggas at Scouts.. whiff. Trukk cruises to the east of the rockpile, getting a good view of the tac squad. Nobz and Trukk fire at Tac squad, Nobz out of range. Big Shoota on Trukk managed to hit all 3 times, wounded 3 marines, and managed to kill one. First Blood to Ork Shooting!
SM Turn 2.
Rhino fails to turn up.
Tactical squad does not move, Missile Launcher fires at the Trukk.. and manages to hit the hills somewhere behind it. (The first of MANY '1's Dave rolled.. poor guy). The Captain thinks about firing at the Trukk, but is out of range with his Plasma Pistol.
The Scouts in the woods, advance and surround their objective, and can now see the Boyz.. firing from these neophytes results in several trees taking fatal wounds, and one Boy getting nailed. (second blood to the boy scouts!)
Ork Turn 2
Deffcoptas fail to turn up. Evidently brewing squig beer (I forgot to even roll for them)
Trukk continues to pull forward, and gets the Nobz into Slugga range.. firing from the Nobz, accounts for one more Marine, and the Big Shoota watches the Big Bullets bounce off the Mark III armour of the marines.. (I hit with all 3 shots again, and wounded with 3, and he made all 3 saves)
The Boyz in the wood make it out, and across into the small wood.. fire sluggas and charge! Alas for the Scouts, they lose 2 guys to rokkits and sluggas.. then the terrible Assault hits them. The Scouts fight first, and managed to kill 2 of the boyz.. the remaining 17 kinda plow the Scouts into the ground, and consolidate around the SM objective.. (Dave quote.. "HOW many dice are you rolling???? ERK!")
SM turn 3
Rhino and second tac squad arrive!
The Rhino and cargo rumble onto the field behind the ruins in the NW corner, obviously intending to pay back the Boyz for the slaughter of the Scouts.. The Marine hanging out the top with the Heavy Bolter manages to hit 2 times, and kill 2 Boyz! The Lesson of "Cover Saves from Trees" evidently being forgotten by the Orks, as the Rhino Storm Bolter manages to kill 2 more Boyz.. making that squad down to 13 members.
The Missile Launcher from the other Tactical squad finally remembers the Litany of Aiming and hits the Trukk square.. he should also have remembered the Litany of Armaments, as the shell was a dud (another 1 on the Armor Pen roll).. The Captain showed him how it was done by taking the Trukk out with his trusty Plasma Pistol.. Good hit, a roll of a 6, followed by a Damage Chart roll of 6, made the Trukk collapse on the spot. Nobz and Warboss get out with no damage.
Ork Turn 3
Deffcoptas arrive at the battle, and follow up the Trukk path..
Nobz and Warboss move towards the Tac Squad and Captain, firing as they go.. they account for 2 more bolter marines and the CombiScorcha doing nothing.. leaving 6 guys left in the squad. The Deffcoptas then fire on the squad, and take out 2 more Marines.. leaving the Missile Launcher, Flamer, Sarge and a grunt..
The Boyz in da Wood fire their 2 Rokkits at the Rhino coming their way, and have typical Ork Shooting, damaging the ruins instead of the Rhino.
The Nobz Mob and Warboss charge into the Tac Squad, with one Nob making it to contact the Captain himself! Of course.. the Captain managed to deal enough damage to kill him before the Nob could do anything. The Remaining Nobz and Warboss manage to inflict enough on the Tac squad to kill all but the Sarge, and the Marines make their morale check! Locked into combat they stay.
SM Turn 4.
The Rhino moves up, and the second Tactical Squad piles out and rapidfires into the Boyz in the wood. Easily the BEST shooting of the game for the Marines, killing 3 Boyz with the flamer and 4 Boyz with bolter fire. The Rhino contributes 1 more casualty as well (leaving 5 Boyz left, Nob, 2x Rokkits, and 2 Boyz).
The close combat over by the Ork Objective becomes the focus.. the Captain has maneuvered into base-to-base with the Warboss and with his initiative, he strikes first. 4 Attacks, needing 3+ to hit.. and the roll is 1, 2, 1, 1.. a complete and total miss.. obviously he is traumatized at the loss of so many of the Emperor's Finest, (either that, or he tripped over a rock.. ). The Sarge put a Nob out of this world.. but when the Warboss struck back with the remaining 2 Nobs.. the Captain was gutted. 4 hits, 3 blown Iron Halo saves.
The victorious Orks consolidated towards the SM objective and the 10 marines and Rhino threatening the western flank.
Ork Turn 4
Warboss and Nobs head towards the Rhino and Marines, almost getting there.
Boyz in the wood stay there, getting ready to shoot.
Deffcoptas swing around the rockpile and take aim at the Rhino side armor.
Deffcoptas fire.. and 2 of the 3 hit, and both Penetrate. Rolling damage, the Rhino's ammo bins are breached and it Blows UP!! A blast radius of 5 inches, means that all the Marines, the Warboss and a Nob, and 4 of the Boyz in da Wood are hit by flaming debris. The Warboss gets hurt! Flaming Rhino Chunks hit him! (The only wound he took all night).. The Nob was killed, 2 more boyz were killed, and 3 Marines too. (definitely one of the highlights of the night)
Orkish shooting managed to kill 1 more Marine.
We decided to call it at this point, I think.
Conclusions.. Dave was amazed that this amount of "stuff" happened within an hour.. (The game only took 55-60 minutes, tops) The new Assault phase and rules are SCARY amount of dice if you are getting charged by Orks.
Both Armies looked great, I wish I had a camera to record the game.
