Subject: Genestealers with scuttle?

So this is really more of a clarification for me. I'm putting together an attacking army which will always go first verse a defending. If i give genestealers scuttlers would they really be able to get into cc on my first turn?
this is what i'm thinking, and i'm sure i'm SO NOT the first... i've just been out of the game for a while so the new Nid codes is totally new to me.
all stealers have "infiltrate" which allows them to be deployed 18" away from an enemy unit.
"scuttlers" give them the "scout" ability which allows them a free move before the game starts... they move fore 6"... 12" to go
then since i'm going first in this scenario they would get their normal 6" movement, fleet of claw just to dance around and then their 6" assault?

holy crap you're right! they used to though didn't they? i guess now they only have infiltrate if they're with the Broodlord and then they can't really have Scuttlers because the BL can't have them, they also loose "fleet of claw". well that changes everything.

Do the trick with Hormagaunts instead. They get 12" charges. Not as impressive as when a stealer does it, but still.
Scuttling Stealers are for flanking btw. That way noone will shoot on them until they are in a pretty dangerous spot, and noone will want to deploy artillery (or pretty much anything) within the possible 18" assault from a short edge.

Yes, Outflanking 'stealers can make your opponent cry, especially if they're guard.

Unless they've got an advisor or two...

There might be a reason to take a lictor in an army with outflanking stealers. The reroll makes a lot of difference on reserve rolls.
31% instead of 17% chance on a 6+ roll.
66% instead of 34% chance on a 5+ roll.
75% instead of 50% chance on a 4+ roll.
You only have a 44% chance to come in from your preferred table edge though, so bring two squads.

I realize scuttlers are also useful for outflanking but really, unless they can jump into CC as soon as they come in all they're going to do is divert shots from the gaunts to the stealers. I think tucking the stealers behind a squad of spingaunts to give them a 4+ cover save is the best way to get most of them to melee.
i use scuttlers on my gaunts when i'm moving on from the board edge and i need room haha. it's a good way to start your first turn with you meat shield in front of you.

The threat of stealers charging anything up to 18" from the table edge is more than worth the 240+ points that two scuttling squads costs you. Your enemy may choose to squeeze his forces together in the center, and then he gets to shoot at your stealers, but your deathspitters and barbed stranglers have a field day and his units will have to shoot through eachother to hit your main force. Or he may choose to spread out and let you charge.

That's true and I suppose they're have plenty to shoot at with Tyrants, Fexes, raveners and warriors coming at them.

Infiltrating Broodlord

The key is to take multiples... Take 2 or 3 broods. And if you can, get them into cover so the enemy will have to decide which cover save to shoot at. As long as you have lots of other big nasty things for people to be worried about.
And just as a clarification, scuttlers specifically give you the SCOUTING ability, not infiltrate as others have said. An infiltrated broodlord with retinue is great but guess who will be shot at first when they're 16" up... I've never had success with them.

They certainly make ol' Trenchie cry.
I have an opponent who does this on a depressingly regular basis. I've got to the point that I either stack up my deployment in the very center of the board (which causes problems of it's own) or place small screening units on the flanks to absorb the the stealer charge. They of course die in the process, but they set the the stealers up to be shot to bits on the following turn.
Happily this same 'nid player has had the Guard bug bite him in a big way and he's building a new army. I won't have to deal with his freaking bug for a while after this Saturday!
