Anyone have any Hydra Flak Conversion ideas that would be significantly less expensive then the $60 dollars + shipping + wait an eternity per Hydra of Forge World?

Its basically some auto cannons mounted on a chimera so wouldn't some WWII quad 2cm anti anti aircraft turret put on top of a chimera chassis work but what scale would it have to be?

If someone has done one already what wwii model did you use?

I've been working on a variety of ideas for some Hydra conversions as well, ranging from SM dreadnought torsos, IG Sentinel bodies, and CSM Defiler turrets as the Hydra turret. Each has their own problems - the SM dread torsos are just too distinctively SM, although the shoulder mounts are really good for easily converting into the autocannon mounts. The CSM Defiler turret has the right shape, but unfortunately, the left and right mounts are different sizes, thus making mounting identical sets of cannons on each side difficult. The Sentinel body is nice as it fits well with the IG aesthetic, but it's a little too tall and narrow...

I've seen a couple scratch-builds and I'm tempted to just go that way myself. It's lacking in the detail, of course, that the FW models are, but until GW makes up the models, it might be the best way to go.

You can wait for the terrain bits that're coming out with the turrets, and see if you can mount those on the roof of the chimeras.

Take a Basilisk, use it Earthshaker gun as your platform, Then kit bash the twin-linked autocannons from the Defiler onto it. Shaving and filing off the blasphemous parts.

That's the best idea i can come up with on short notice.

If not, find a way to mount 4 IG autocannons onto a mounted housing to sit on the Basilisk.

My idea is to use buy the 2 TL auto cannon dred arms from FW ( $9 each? ) and mount them on AOBR dred body .

Could you link to it or bring it up? I didn't see it. Although looking through his gallery did give me a great idea on how to do a Hydra conversion....I'll need to do a little experimenting and get back to folks on it...

Hmm can't seem to find it anymore. I know he did a Hellhound conversion as well as a low profile Hydra Conversion.

You sure you're not thinking about John_HwangDD? I've seen his conversions.

Maybe you could do this (I thought about this in like 2mins so dont have a go at me if it sounds stupid)

1. Take a Chimera
2. Convert the top hatch so it fits a Rhino hatch which has the mounting for a Razorback turret
3. Using the Razorback turret as a base, design the AA mounts
4. Add targeters and details etc

I'd use a Basilisk as the platform as well as the crew copmartment from a Sentinel (preferably one with an armored top). After that I'd use 4 Sentinel Autocannons, 2 on each side, to represent the twin linked ACs the Hydra has. They'd need to have something fabed up for them to look like they're attached to the sides of the sentinel compartment though, like a rack of some sort. I'm not sure what I'd use for that though, probably greenstuff.

I've got a spare turret plate from a rhino. I've got a spare chimera hull (might have been an old griffin.)

I can build up the hull, turret mount and quad guns easily enough and it will look close enough to do the job.
