Right. So...I just lost a game, yet again...and think it's time to re-read/-retrain myself how to play with Dwarfs.

I hate the idea of taking a gun line, yet in my last game I tried it (2 units of 14 thunderers, 1 of 10, a cannon, a Grudge Thrower w/rune of penetrating, accuracy and reloading, and an Organ Gun) - I think I messed up my deployment though because I couldn't maximize the use of all those together (too spread out).

I like big blocks of infantry...units of 30 Warriors and 20 Longbeards, 25 slayers and 25 Ironbreakers....but I'm coming from a background of playing HE and Empire, so I'm used to manouverability, as well as the ability to be both a strong shooty army at the same time as being quick offensively.

I've been playing with my Dwarfs for over a year now (about 10-12 games though)...I believe I've won more than I've lost, and I *am* very much enjoying my stumpies, but I'm just not sure I've really grasped how I should be playing them.

So, what comps should I be looking at that I'm not right now? (at 2000pts, I'll generally take a thane, BSB, 2 units of thunderers, 2 units of 20 warriors, 1 unit 20 longbeards, 1 unit of 20 slayers or 1 unit of 20 Iron breakers, an organ gun, a bolt thrower, a cannon). As far as tactics, I usually don't sit back and wait for him to come to me, I try to lurch forward....I don't like being patient and sitting (again, my old instincts kicking in). I know this is likely re-hasing old stuff, and apologize for that.

Thoughts?

Definetly try the anvil out to make some combat moves with the stunties. It brings a whole new dimension to the army. Sure, it has it downsides such as large points value and the chance to misfire but the fact that pretty much every serious tourney-dwarf list has it speaks for itself.

yeah, so I've heard....but the reason I've avoided using the Anvil thus far is the same as the reason why I've avoided using the all-out gunline - I *know* players hate to face it, and I'm out to demonstrate that Dwarfs do not need to rely on those tactics to win...but maybe it's worth a shot, once?

The anvil isn't so bad if you don't use the magic-missile-like power and don't use Thorek.
That's a lot of points being spent on Core selections. Maybe drop 1-2 of them to free up points for another Thane and a Gyrocopter? The characters in the Dwarf Army are really the damage dealers and take a lot to be killed, and Gyrocopters provide a nice mobile shooting base that can help protect your flanks.

...also you can build up a very nasty static combat res and be winning combat by like 3-4 before any blows are struck.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)

You want to win by limiting your options?

Every well-rounded army is going to have some kind of long range attack units and a solid Dwarf gunline is very necessary to cover that characteristic.

If you don't want an anvil, reduce the number of warriors to 20 and spend whatever's left on bolt throwers (or more guns, whatever)

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

i would at least take a second bolt thrower as they are 2 for one special slot.

i run 5 warmachines at 2250 (cannon, 2 BT, OG and Gyro) and i never get dinged on comp when i play it. i ask everyone at tounrneys and i never get slammed for haviing 5.

if your used to maneuverability, i would suggest the anvil, i ust started using it and i like it more then the lord.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!
