If you have a new codex and some old models that are still legal but you can't buy more to reconfig them to be an standalone army of the actual codex, how do you treat them?

1) Try to figure if they may fill one or more slots, shelf some models and fill the army list with new models after ?

2) Try to give them a different role, maybe cut the units into several smaller units and change their "job", for example move an infantry squad to veteran status. ?

3) Start with new models and shelf the old ?

4) Mix and match regiments if they are IG, so 1 platoon from this world and the 2nd platoon from another source ?

Any ideas may help.

I usually use the old units in paralell with the new ones. I've got one unit of sternguards in my marine army that is built from the very first wh40k marines plastic set from -84. Since they have been around my army for 20 years, I figured they would be veterans by now. And in my tactical squads are mixed in all the other types of plastic marines ever made, it gives a distinct feeling of a living force with several generations of handcrafted armours etc.
