I'm pretty new to Mini's at 33 I feel late to the hobby, but I wanted to share my satisfaction yesterday of working out my Rohan Calvery painting.
The idea is for it to be reasonibly quick for me to put together 1000 points in War of the Ring so I worked on the idea of base colours with a wash of devlan mud.
Working on a base of army painter brown spray I was pretty nervous about getting horses and indeed the Rohan Riders to look good enough for the table, but I think I managed it.
It's inspired me for improving my skills and working on extra steps for heroes and more important figures and I can see me getting in to trying new things out
I think I have got a reasonible technique going and now the task doesn't seem so daunting.
Just wanted to share as I felt really pleased with myself when I saw the end results yesterday, made me realise I can do this!

What is your technique? I'm looking to get into LOTR and paint up some Knights of Minas Tirith and painting horses is intimidating.

Hey, I just painted a squad of grots with light basecoats of foundationpaints followed by washes too. It is a really quick and satisfing (how do you spell that?) technique, which you have used to great effect there I might add.
Could we have a picture with better light?

Wow! I agree, horses are intimidating... what a great job for being new to the hobby (or even for not being new ).
Congrats, and I'd love to see a pic of a whole slew of them!
(Imagining chants of "Death! Death! Death!" like in the book/movie )

Thank for all the feedback, would love thoughts on how I can improve. Ultimatley I guess that just boils down to time and trying different things.

Sure, once I have more of them done (i'm working through them every night) I'll get more photos up.

I sprayed 'brown leather' Army Painter spray as my primer then I literally used foundation paints for all the base colours and a wash over the top.
I'm pretty slow, takes me about 1.5 hours a mini but I am sure if I did a non washed method it would take me triple that.
Gets the rank and file done easily for the table and I'll spend more time on the heros and epics

Thanks thats really great to hear!
Yup only other army I have painted really before this is a very small 40k Crimson Fist Army.
I'm so absorbed and enjoying it.
Previously I have been involved in timescale painting which really put me off. Having to do 500 points a month nearly stopped me from getting in to the hobby. Now I just paint and grow my army and I love it! I'm sure once I am more confident I can take part in things like that, but not yet
