Hi

I have a 4th edition Imperial Guard army which I put on hold when news of the new IG codex came out. Now I have the new Codex, just crunching some numbers and looking for ideas as to how I should/could run Vostroyans now.

The codex seems to show basic Guardsmen wearing full Vostroyan armour; the newest WD shows Vostroyans as veterans in carapace armour.

Here are my basic ideas:

- basic Guardsmen - this is my starting point, as it allows you lots of soldiers and using two basic platoons also giv es ability to issue lots of orders - but downside is that the Vostroyans are clearly shown wearing heavy armour;

- veteran sqauds - basic vets, could be mounted in Chimeras and get lots of special weapons - downside is sheer lack of numbers, as vets are still only T3, and query whether Vostroyans are such an elite regiment (they never used to be!); also would lose out on heavy weapon and special weapon squads (although this is not such a downside I guess); also can't combine units as with standard infantry;

- veteran squads in carapace armour - this is the only eay to get carapace under the new codex for standard troop choices, but costs a lot! Overall starting point for a squad would be 100 points - twice that of a basic Guard squad - is carapace really worth that increase??

Would be grateful for any suggestions. I'm also thinking that I would prefer now to have to buy/paint lots more models. Here is a list of what I have so far, and the basis for my 4th ed army:

Command squad with 2 plasma guns
Heavy weapon squad with 3 lascannons
Heavy weapon squad with 3 mortars
Infantry squads with grenade launchers and heavy bolters (x3)
Infantry squad with lasguns only
Hellhound tank
Leman Russ with heavy bolter and heavy bolter sponsons
Leman Russ with lascannon
Leman Russ Demolisher with heavy bolter and plasma cannon sponsons

Also enough psykers to make up a battle squad, which I think I will need now.

Thanks in advance for any assistance or ideas.

I have been playing against the new IG for about a month now.

I wouldn't worry too much about staying true to the Vostroyan fluff.

They have more elite equipment because their mommies love them, but that doesn't necessarily translate into better armor. Their flack armor and lasguns may be lovingly crafted and passed down generations but that equipment is still flack armor and a lasgun.

Here is a rough idea for the list I would build using the majority of your stuff, but you may still have to purchase a few more items.

-HQ-

Creed and Kell (use the Vostorian Commander and the Banner Guy, they are special characters that don't have rules on their own but make perfect "counts as")
Command Squad as you have it

-Troops-

Infantry Platoon
- Command Squad with 4 Meltas in a Chimera (use your existing grenade models and add the melta barrell. Works perfectly)
- Three Infantry Squads with Plasma and Autocannon (that combo is the best)
- 3 Lascannon Heavy Weapon Squads

Veterans w/ 4 Meltas in a Chimera

-Fast Attack-

Hellhound

-Heavy-

Squadron of 2 Leman Russes with full Heavy Bolters (see if you can swap the Lascannon on the Russ with the Heavy Bolter on the Demolisher)

Leman Russ Demolisher with Lascannon and Plasma Cannons (you want the AP to match on this tank)

I would also add some artillery either in Basilisks and/or Griffons, though the Colossus is the best in my mind, followed shortly behind by the Medusa. Even one Colossus would be rather fun, but you have to go to Forgeworld to get the model.

I figured Creed would be your best HQ option because with the high amount of Lascannon teams you would field, you need all the extra orders you can get, and Creed supports a bunch of line infantry rather well. Try and disconnect fluff and rules. You can play to a theme using the standard list and using "counts as" characters.

Current Armies: Blood Angels, Imperial Guard (40k), Skorne, Retribution (Warmachine), Vampire Counts (Fantasy)
