i would like to build a Catachan style army with no tanks. Basically a good mix of scouting troops plus vendettas kitted to take out enemy infantry... Extra armor (must take), hellfury missiles and heavy bolter sponsons... These gunships can lay down lots of troop killing dakka and the extra armor is a gift sent down from the Emperor... Plus you can put a scoring unit inside to grab objectives late in the game. I'm sure most will want to run them with max twin linked lascannons and believe me when I say I can see why. That said I can also see them as less of a threat versus shooty armies and therefore shot at less often if you go this route. Two armed fully with lascannons is pretty scary for an opponent fielding lots of mech/armor though.

Thought?

Why get vendetta's when Valks with a Multi Laser and two Rocket Pod Pieplates can do more anti-infantry damage over the game? Plus, You can move 12" and fire all 3 weapons. Otherwise the Valk is exactly like a Vind.

I can see the desire for an army like this. 6 Valks with Melta Vets would cover most of your army needs right off the bat tho.

Throw in a Psyker Squad or two for S9 pie plate goodness and giggles.

Its hard to imagine the hellfury's being enough and seems like your not getting your points worth considering the Valk with pods is exactly the same cost and can fire on the move.

Comparing the two is all therory hammer still as I just finished my vendettas yesterday and have not had a chance to put them in the field yet.

I guess that so much of it will depend on what else is in the army but specialists usually beat generalists so I can only see a mix of Pod Valks and Vendis being better than just Hellfury Vendis.

I will have to go back and take a look at the Valk. Thanks for the feedback.

Im planning on getting both types of valkyrie; The vendetta & a dual rocket pod valkyrie.

The vendetta speaks for itselfs. The valkyrie is a bit more of a subtle bird.. being able to charge around 12" while laying down 100% firepower is great because it allows you to cover some decent ground without flat-out moving (which prevents death shooting& immobilised results) - as a result of this.. you can get into some tasty position for the melta veterans inside your valkyrie! Mix the ying with the yang. Infantrycide & Tank termination

I'm looking at a two-to-one ratio of Rocket Pod Valks to Vendettas, myself.

No tanks in my army if I can help it.

Definitely a Vet army then. Probably best with Melta/Shotty vets with Strakken around somewhere. The Melta vets plus Strakken can murder any non-assaulty troops, tanks, and Monsterous Creatures. The Valks can lay enough focused anti-infantry firepower down to slaughter most of their assault infantry and hordes. Throw in a Psyker squad for Pie Plates o doom, and you have a well rounded army, if unconventional.

Veteran Based Air Cav with Unconventional outflanking/infiltrating support looks to be a very fun list to play.

I still need another 3 valks for mine, and I dont think it will be my primary tourney list, but I really look forward to palying it in friendly games and small local tourneys.

I think with a few tweaks it can not knock off top tier armies. It's very fast and can lay a back of firepower. Looking forward to playtesting it. My guess is that in three months this will be one of the killer net lists for guard. The tweaks which I have not yet disclosed takes it over the top.

Similar ideas have been discussed (a little bit on here, a lot between my little group, and I'm sure within other circles as well) a little bit related to an army like the one you've oulined in here. It looks to be a strong concept, though we don't have enough Valks/Vendettas at our disposal to proper test it yet. How many Valks/Vendettas are you looking at running at this point?

Not 100% sure yet... hopefully the bare minimum which would come in at 3 gunships. Like I said no treads in this list.
