You can buy inexpensive shelves and storage bins at target, walmart, home depot, etc.
I keep mine in their foam all the time, because it's easier to stack foam than it is to stack individual models, but the foam is on shelves in the gaming room.

Well sinc ei'm also from northern ireland can hopefully tell you some. Ikea have shelves and cabinets you could use, or homebase have some really cheap units which will hold loads and if i rememebr right they cost me £23 per one, 8 shelves and enough room to hold 4 landraiders on each shelf. they come with doors with pve filling but i left them off as little too tacky.

For both storage and transport, I line .50 calibur ammo crates with foam. The crates themselves are cheap, 5$ at my local military surplus store, made of 16 gauge steel. My two year old pushe one off of the dinner table, full of models, and my figs were fine. The floor had a dent in it.
I dunno if you can get them in Ireland or not, but they're the best thing I've found to date. And they look pretty sweet.

I used to use a shell case a friend of mine gave me from the CIWS system on his vessel. Just a bit odd dimensions and really a bit small. Tall, narrow.

I found some self assembly shelving units made from cheap pine in my local diy store. I then bought a load of A4 size paper trays to put on the shelves. As my armies increased in size I added another shelf in between each existing shelf as I found I didn't really need the vertical space allowed for in the original (bookshelf) design. The trays hold plenty of models in a convenient carry tray which is handy for bringing to the table.

There are shops that will cut foam rubber to your requirements. For general storage, get shelves etc from Ikea.
For transport, buy cheap plastic briefcases from an office equipment supplier and line them with cut foam.

The best solution I have found are the card cases from KR. They're cheap and specifically made for miniatures.

I'm a fan of the cardboard KR cases too, easy to stack, and you can write on them.

Haha, I was going to add that but I thought it would sound silly but it is indeed very handy to write on them and know what you have in there.
You then just pop out the trays into a more robust case for games. The metal KR one in my case.
