I was setting up a Ravenwing flavored army and was going through my options. I was going to include Khan and a Captain with bike. In the Chapter Tactics section of Khan it says it gives all units the Outflank ability. In the short rulebook it says something about scouts being able to outflank when being put in reserves. How does Khans Chapter tactics ability work and does it bypass needing the unit to be a scout?

Essentially - when put in reserve you can then outflank, it's as simple as that.

Having scout allows you to Outflank, as does having inflitrate, however neither state these are the ONLY ways to get Outflank. Therefore if you are granted outflank you go into reserve and, if you want to use it, declare that you are doing so.

Thats pretty powerful since it can apply to your entire army "all units in your army are granted outflank". Granted its a random edge, but that give alot of mobility. Espcially since I am using it in conjuction with 70% of my army. How would you play this out? I am working on a mostly bike army and last time I got shot to heck before turn 3. I am going to use outflank to prolong my troop deployment while most of all my armor killing squads deployon the opposite table edge as well.

Yup, the downside being you have to commit a fair bit to reserves, and it is a random board edge.

It doesn't give the whole army outflank necessarily, anything that doesn't have combat tactics and isn't a dedicated transport doesn't get the ability to outflank, so dreadnoughts, servitors, land speeders, and any heavy support choices other than devestators couldn't come in as part of an outflank move.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Well it depends on how you build your army. One nice use of Khan I have found is to take Lascannon-Razorbacks (with 6 man or 10 man Squads) and outflank the Razorbacks while deploying the Squads normally. Since the Razorbacks are "Dedicated", they can outflank and Lascannon Side Armour

I am not sure on the wording but i'm not sure if it specifies only the units that have combat tactics. Was there a FAQ about the ability? I know it says that it includes dedicated transports but I'll have to check my SM codec when I get home. I'd really like to have the ability to just hop over the table and "shake hands" as it were. I would assume it follows the Vulkan Typo ruling that the text says that it applies "to all units" so therefore not just the ones that have combat tactics.

Even though the outflank is a random table side, it can still put you in a better position to close with the opposition as opposed to coming in from your table edge. Since bikes can't deepstrike, this just gives you an alternative to consider when making a biker list, so you don't have to come in off your table edge every time you take reserves. Giving your transports this ability has marginal uses, but it can still put you in a better position to contest an objective. Even if you only have a 1/3rd chance of getting on the table side you want, in multiple objective games it can still be beneficial in some instances.

To answer the wording question, it says here: "...all units in your army exchange the Combat Tactics special rule for the ability to outflank. If you choose to do this, all dedicated transports also gain the ability to outflank..." Pg 94, SM codex.

Therefore, any unit that has Combat Tactics under its listing can use this ability. You could bring in a Sternguard squad, for example, with or without a dedicated transport, as they have the Combat Tactics Special Rule under their listing (pg. 136). A Dreadnought, on the other hand, cannot, because it has no such special rule under your listing.

I need to double-check the FAQ to verify, if somebody already has then feel free to correct me.

Thank you for looking that up. I would say you are correct about the "all units" thing. Looks like I'll have to find an alternative to my concept. Attack Bikes maybe if they have combat tactics. Or I could just put in a Landraider with CC termies to give a 3 strong nasty spearhead.

edit: To clarify, this list is exhaustive.

Indeed. The reason Vulkans ability affects everyone and Not Khans is because Vulkan does not ask anyone to exchange anything. It says EVERYONE loses Combat tactics (whether you had it or not), and everyone GAINS the Twin linking Goodness (Whether you had CT or not)
