Page 66 of the main Rule Book under Transport Capacity, first sentence, second paragraph:

"A transport may carry a single infantry unit and/or any number of independent characters..."

My question is Can you have multiple squads equaling up to or less than the capacity of the transport embark on a general transport vehicle?

Although the paragraph uses "a single infantry unit" this is not in the usual style of Games Workshop, which might usually use "only one" or some other more restrictive wording. Is this a strict "Rules As Written" situation, in which case, one and only one unit, or is it a "Rules As Intended" situation, and just poor writing. I have never seen another player put more than one unit in a transport, not that I can think of, but now it comes up for a particular tactic I have in mind. I, personally, see no reason for multiple units adding up to or less than the cargo capacity would not be allowed, nor would I prevent it myself.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

RaW, and probably RaI = 1 unit, not the equivalent of 1 unit.

Seems pretty clear that only a single unit can make use of it :(
would be nice to be able to mix it up though.

From page 66 of the Warhammer 40,000 5th edition rulebook:

Only infantry models may embark in transports (it is worth specifying that this does not include jump infantry), unless a Codex book states otherwise.

Therefore the passage you quoted above tells us what kind of unit (infantry) and how many units (one, plus Independent Characters) may embark on a transport.

cannot correlate their innate inferiority with their inevitable
defeat. It would seem that stupidity is as eternal as war.'

Yes, I know exactly what the book says, my question is if there is any precedent, outside of special rules, the points this out as simply poor phrasing, or is it as specific as it appears to be. Information from a FAQ or past rules. It has never actually come up for me amazingly.

I'm not sure why you bothered to post this, as you've answered your own question. The rules as written clearly states that only a single infantry unit can embark on a transport.

Done.

Indeed, the rules are clear. Only a SINGLE infantry Unit (including Any IC with the unit) may embark on a transport, and only then if they actually can fit in it.

It appears that you are trying too hard. The only time when multiple units can board a transport is if the transport is a superheavy transport, or if you travel back in time and decide to start playing 2nd edition. Say hi to the overwatch and range modifier rules for me if you decide to go that way.

More specific question, probably covered somewhere I don't recall (but I'm sure YOU will, Gwar!, you encyclopedia, you!):

Does a space marine squad that has been divided into combat squads still count as a single unit for transport purposes? I.E. two combat squads sharing a rhino = against rules?

They count as 2 separate squads for everything and Anything (they just happen to share the same FoC Slot), so no, you cannot put 2 Combat Squads in a Rhino, they are worth 2 KP yadda yadda blah blah blah.
