Using Chimeras for my command squads I have a couple of meltas and a flamer in each. It says in new IG codex up to 5 models can fire from the top hatch, but in reality they are firing from the fixed lassgun emplacements. So can I fire my meltas out the fixed positions? My opponent said not, only lasguns. If I wanted to fire my specials I had to use the top hatch and therefore also count as open topped next turn. Also, if I do you the fixed lasguns why fire 5? 3 face in opposite directions to the other 3. How are other IG players treating this rule?

The bit about Lasguns is Fluff, nothing more. If you can fire 5 non-lasgun weapons, go right ahead. The Rules for the Chimera say: "Fire Points: 5 Models may fire from the Chimeras Top Hatch." (Page 39, IG Codex). Therefore, 5 models can fire whatever they want. End. Of Discussion.

Yes. The rule about it being open topped is no more. The rules say 5 Models may fire, therefore 5 models may fire. If none of those 5 models happen to not have a Lasgun between them, good for them. The reason (I believe) they changed it from 2 to 5 is so Infantry Squads can "use" the Lasguns on the side without too many special rules.

My opponent is my son and he is here with me. He insists that open topped is still in 5th edition rules unless you are wearing power armour. Are you thinking the fire points along each side are used?

No, it is the top hatch. Ask him to show you in the 5th edition rulebook where it says firing sans Power Armour makes it open topped? It is not in the rulebook, and it is not in the IG codex, so it does not. It Used to be (in the IG Codex), but it isn't now.

On an Unrelated note I took my mellow pills today and inadvertently avoided a major situation here where I insulted someone son unknowingly.

Ask him to find a rule in v5 stating that transports count as open-topped when firing from a fire point.

Hint: he won't find one

Yes you can fire them, just not after moving the vehicle....

Conditional Open topped has gone gone gone from the new codex...
