I've been working through my rank and file Rohan Riders with a simple base colour and wash method which is looking really nice.

For my character Erkenbrand I want to do his horse white as it should be, what's a simple and effective way to do whites on a horse? This is a dry run really for my ultimate goal of painting Gandalf the White and his horse Shadowfax

Thanks

You can start off with a light grey primer, use a darker grey for the shading and the drybrush/highlight up to white.

as He said, start of grey, then mix your paint lighter each layer, adding blends up to pure white for the final highlights, most white horses have grey skin I believe(they are called grey), so this will probably look quite realistic.

Also try looking for a horse book (I got mine from the Works shop for about £5).

It has loads of pics of different horses and is a great resource for doing realistic paint schemes.

Or try looking up 'horse grey' on google (as white horses are called greys for some reason!)

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Appaloosa, Buckskin, Palamino... Paints, Piebalds, Dapples...

Best bet is prolly something like starting out with a GW's lighter foundation grey, and then drybrushing spacewolf grey, and then skull white, hooves should be a slightly darker grey, a lil touch of elf flesh on the nose wouldn't hurt.

Hypothetically you could also go desert yellow, bleached bone, white for a more golden white..

<Rarity> I am not whining, I am complaining! Do you want to hear whining?

Thiiis is whiiiiining! Oooo, this mini is too expeennsive! I'm' going brrookee! Can't you make it cheaper? Oh, it's resin and not metal anymore! Why didn't you take it off the sprue first? That's gonna leave a pour spout, and the FLGS is so far away, WHY DO I HAVE TO SUPPORT IIIIIIIT?! </Rairty>

Just to be more helpfull..
Appaloosa, (spotted, clustering to the rump)
Buckskin (mustard yellowish, with black legs mane, tail)
Palamino (golden with white mane and tail)
Dun (like buckskin, but with a shoulder cross and stripes on the legs)

Paints, Piebalds, Dapples...

To the specific problem at hand..

It would help if you were more specific. What colour do you want to paint this white horse?

You can do a blond-white horse by starting out with Snakebite Leather mixed with white. Highlight up with several layers (minimum three) by adding more and more white to the Snakebite Leather. This gives you a warm, organic looking white.
