So a friend and i were tired of using the floor to play games on so we decided to make our own modular table.

Materials needed:
1 8x4 piece of plywood
4 4ft long 1.5 in dowel rods
small wooden dowels
drill press and saw
extra bits for mounting everything
screws

I don't actually have a walkthrough of this, but you should be able to figure it out from the pics.

Steps taken
Cut 8x4 into 2x2 pieces
Each 2x2 had mounts put on it, in order to connect each one to the one next to it.
The 4 outer corners has a block to put a leg in. along with the middle section also.

There was also a bigger block put on 1 2x2 on each side that would support all 4 pieces once a leg was put in.

a close up view of the connecting pieces.

Cut the 4ft dowels into 2 ft sections for each leg
Put the 2 end sections together.

then put the middle section together and then push all sections together.

and an underneath look to show the support.

and what it looks like when taken apart and stacked up. fits into my closet out of the way.

Will probably be adding a felt material to each piece soon.

Comments and criticisms are welcome.

that looks pretty neat, but do you have anything in place to keep the pieces locked together? I'd worry about bumping it and having a section dislodge.

Well they stay pretty well locked, all the dowels slide in pretty tight. it wont just slide apart, you have to pull it apart. so far it hasnt come apart on us. here is another pic that shows the dowels.

If you were concerned about it coming apart you could add a screw/dowel on each block then use a small bungee (sp) cord to hold them together.
I think it looks great and a little felt would be swell.
I may have to borrow some of this for a future project if you don't mind.

yeah that would work, or you could use those quick release clamps from home depot or something.

but so far we havent had a problem with it coming apart at all.
and please feel free to copy or improve it.

Just don't let that one chubby guy, guzzling a soda and that happens to be at every game, sit on the table.

Interesting idea, I don't need a portable table, but now I know there is a solution to that problem if it ever arises. If you're worried about it coming apart, just use a hasp. You could even get a locking one so no one can disassemble your table when you're not looking.

Good thinking, jabba. Sounds like a solid idea.

yeah we thought of that to, just didnt see any at the store when we were buying supplies. its something we can always do later.
We have bought some felt for it, and are going to try to wrap each piece individually, and will post how that goes.
We might also try to make another section to make a 4x8 table.
