Okay, so I've got the basic idea of taking a Lord with orb and veil with 2+ squads of warriors with a Monolith and maybe a squad of scarabs for around 750 points.

Where should I go after this?

Paiahs have warscythes, they don't get back up but do not count towards phase out? That seems like a fair trade. 36 points seems to be the only problem.
Though compared to 2 squads of warriors at the same cost they seem to not be that bad of a cc unit.

Flayed ones? Never really seen people play with these but apparantly are good.

Immortals are T5, heavy gauss. not that bad?

Destroyers (both) seem to be one of the better units in the army, especially heavy destroyers.

So I plan on getting the army box and a Monolith already have a Lord model 'proxy' (Tomb Kings Lord, same thing amirite?)

The true followers of the God-Emperor will never forget their name! We are the Imperial Guard!
Now and forever serving the God-Emperor, and Him alone!

Don't get the monolith, it's over rated. Its impossible to kill, but kills nothing. Since it costs too many points, it will hurt your model counts (and phase out). Don't take pariahs or flayed ones, neither one is worth the points. The stand out units are immortals and destroyers (both). Tomb spiders and scarabs both have uses, but its a bit more advanced tactics than I can explain. Necrons don't belong in CC, pretty much ever. If you are in danger of being assaulted, run if you have too. Counter assault with scarabs to delay them if you must.

The battle force is a pretty good deal, as is the warrior phalanx box. The second option is a full 1500 point army (though a bad one). If you take a monolith it might be the better deal. Haven't done the math on savings for the battle force yet, but phalanx is supposed to be a nearly 25 percent savings.

Not counting towards phase out is a very, very bad thing.

Look at it this way:

You have 50 "necron" models (warriors, destroyers, lords, etc.) Then you have to get down to 12 Necron models before you phase out. So your opponent has to kill 38 models.

If you have 10 non-Necron models (pariahs, monoliths, ctan, etc) and 40 Necron models then your opponent only has to kill 30 Necron models to force you to phase out.

Those examples don't even take into account the points-cost of Pariahs, since the more points you spend on non-Necrons the less points you have to spend on Necrons.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

This:

is 100% incorrect, especially when considering this:

which is 100% true. If all your Monolith does the entire game is pull units out of CC, then it's worth it's points.

The rest of the advice in this thread so far is correct.

Also, NEVER under any circumstance, leave home without a Ressurection Orb.

Ever.

A monolith causes all kinds of problems for anyone who does not take an army thats packed to the teeth with lascannons

its shooting kills quite a bit, its pretty much impossible to kill, and its uses are well worth it.

if your playing 2,000 points then go for 2

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Monolith - stick with 1 and use it to pull necron squads through the portal, away from CC. Kind of mid game refused flank. Anymore and you phase out too easily.

Veil can do the same, however new combat means you will be SA before you get to use it, so cant pull the old stick in combat for one round, veil, unleash with loads of guns technique that was a 4th ed fave.

Take squads of 10 necron warriors: 20 doesnt help you stay in combat any easier, and 10 is easier to move around.
