I've been reading and rereading the lizardmen book and I've also read a lot of tactica articles/posts here and on other message boards. There are a few things that I haven't seen talked about much, though.
Skink Warchiefs - From what I can tell there are really only two common uses for these. You can either put them on a stegadon or a terradon. If they're on a stegadon they get a warspear. The benefit of the extra impact hits are pretty obvious. If they're on a terradon they get bane head and a staff of the lost sun. He makes a more effective war machine/lone character killer than a regular unit of terradons but it's expensive. Ultimately, it just seems like the only viable option is to put him on a stegadon. Are there any other good uses for warchiefs? I was thinking that they might work pretty well in blocks of skinks with kroxigors. I just never see anyone mention it.
Salamanders and Razordons - What's the consensus on these? What's a good number to take when you do field them? They seem to be on the expensive side but a lot of people seem to like them. Then someone else comes along and explains what they don't like about them or why one is better than the other. I've got two old school salamanders. They're the old style kind so they might be a pita to find. I don't want to mix old with new and I don't want to buy a bunch of new ones. Should I bother trying to track down a 3rd or is two enough for ~2000-2500 point games? I might be tempted to buy a unit of razordons if they're a lot better than salamanders and they're worth taking in serious games.
Special Characters - They all strike me as overpriced. Lord Mazdamundi looks fun despite his high cost. A 2+ save on a 5 wound model seems to be pretty good. His special spell seems to be quite good as well. Kroq-Gar looks to be very good but not that much better than an old-blood on a carnasaur and he costs a couple hundred more points. On paper he seems to be worth the extra cost since he doesn't suffer from frenzy. His magic weapons are nice as well. If he had something akin to the blade of realities then he'd be awesome. Oxyotyl is the other one that seems to look pretty nice. Put him in a unit of skink skirmishers and you've got a highly mobile unit that can snipe characters while they're trying to hide in their units. Make them chameleons and you get to scout but the unit starts to get on the entirely too expensive side. Those are really the only three special characters that catch my eye. The rest really do seem to be abhorently overpriced.
So what do you guys think?

There's some weird tricks you can pull with the Skink chief, but the two you mention are probably the main ones. I like to keep my skink/krox units down to low size/cost, as they tend to be glass hammers due to the wimpiness of the skinks.
I love both Salamanders and Razordons, myself. Razordons are best used in groups of three to discourage charges. Salamanders are fine at any size -- if I have the spare rare slots, I break them out into ones. Don't forget that both types can do okay in melee -- they're not going to hurt anything serious, but they can put a bite on enemy skirmish troops and whatnot.
The special characters are mostly overpriced. Oxyoytl isn't bad, and Chakax works extremely well vs. certain armies. Otherwise I'd skip them.

You can also have skink chief with wardrums so you can keep on marching - him on a steg is pretty nice. lots of tricks having him on a steg inside a unit of skinks/krox to make a terror causing, impact hits unit thats pretty mean, and has Ld7 stubborn.
I love my sallies! i have two oldies, i'd suggest trackng one down - ebay and "OOP" are your friends there. saying that 2 of them is enough to be a pain to opponents, and make a unit go away - anything T3 with a 4+ or 5+ save dies and then has a good c hance of running away.

you hit the nail on the head with the cheif. He has a couple of spesific uses and that is it. On foot you might as well get a sarus char instead so one of the two mounts is necessary to do anything usefull.
On the sally/razordon I would max out the slot. This allows you to go charging into combat if you need. Nobody is afraid of 1 salamander but three of them can put the hurt on many flanking units (t3, 5 guys, 5+ armor usually)

somewhat relatedly, I had a pack of 3 razordons kill off the last of their handlers from misfires while stand-and-shooting, but they rolled Raargh!! on the monster reaction table. Between the losses from stand and shoot, and the 9 re-rolled S5 attacks from the razordons, they got smooshed pretty quickly hunting packs can definitely put the hurt on units if they need to.

Sorry for the ignorance, but why did you get the "9 re-rolled S5" attacks from the razordons?
Just asking incase I have been missing something.

If you roll Raaargh! on the monster reaction table after all of the crew are dead then the monsters are subject to frenzy and hatred (reroll failed to hits).
