A Leman Russ battle tank part of a squadron of 3 is assaulted on it's left side by a space marine squad. The sgt. with a power fist scores 3 hits and makes three penetrating hits.
Question- are all three pens spread throughout the squadron (where one is actually 8" away) or do all the pens go onto the vehicle in contact?

Clearly answered on page 64, Assault Phase, which references you back to the Damage Results Against Squadrons in the section right above it. Here's the key phrase for ya:
Damage results have
the same effect as described above, and are allocated
against the squadron at each Initiative value,

Thanks, just checking my own take on the written rule.

Just to point out, your Sergeant could be assaulting from the front it wouldn't make a difference, you always hit the rear armour in CC.

I think he's talking about the left side in the case of a 3rd Leman Russ in the squadron being 8 inches away from the actual assault, and not the armor facing.
It's a silly system designed for smaller vehicles in squadrons. In a perfect system, no, your hits would not magically transfer to other vehicles farther away simply because they are grouped together on a piece of paper, but thems the rules. I guess you could say it depicts a unit ravaging an entire vehicle unit by jumping on the tanks and throwing grenades and what have you through the slats, but as for one Power Fister getting three kills off one tank...well, I try not to think about the logistics...

Heck, if they're in an echelon formation, he could hit the front of the first tank and the rear tank could be over 12" away. But yeah, distance from tank being assaulted to other members of the squadron is irrelevant to the results.

Play 3rd edition then, when you can only hit the people in BtB with you!

Irrelevant, because I play Tau, and I do not willfully throw myself to the masses. Only close enough to rapid fire.
But you make a good point, if BtB models were to only wound each other, I only stand to benefit, once I get caught eventually.
