You can use the pictures on thewarstore.com in their Sabol tray section as reference, they have pictures of the trays with various units in them. (
http://www.thewarstore.com/SabolArmyTransportExtraTrays.html) The 4" trays are good for Land Raiders, the 3" trays are good for Rhinos and Dreadnoughts, the 2" trays are good for bikes and large infantry standing up or regular infantry with weapons and arms raised. The 1" trays will work for regular Space Marines, but not for ones with back banners and Standard bearers. You end up taking out too much foam. If you have a Standard Bearer, I would suggest making a pole socket so the Standard is removable and make a pocket for it.
The trays are about 13" X 7.5"; they happen to be the size of a standard carry-on bag interior. If you buy a luggage set, usually the suitcase is twice the size of the carry-on. Two Sabol trays can fit side by side in the suitcase. That's what a friend of ours did. He needed to buy a set of luggage, he bought several Sabol trays to fit in them when he's not travelling.
So I will have 6 tanks. 3 rhinos, 3 predators. I think they fit in 3" foam, so I'll need two of those, but will I have to take off the sponsons and turrets to fit 3 heavy bolter sponsoned predators in to one 3" foam?
Yup, it would be a good idea to magnetize the sponsons and even buy extra bits so you can kit the Rhinos out as Predators, Whirlwinds, Razorbacks, or whatever else you want to later. Rhinos fit perfectly in 3" trays as long as you take the turrets off.
Then there are 6 speeders with various gear. I may magnetize them just because of the gear. No clue what tray size.
2.5" if you pop them off the flying stand. I magnetized my noseguns so I could swap out from the Assault cannon to the Heavy Flamer. I bought a
SM Dreadnought Heavy Flamer for that purpose, or you could magnetize the forearm of the Dread's
CCW arm so you can swap out the Storm Bolter with the Heavy Flamer and use the Heavy Flamer on the Speeders when you're not using it on the Dread, I would also buy extra nose guns and side gunners, too, so I could mix and match.
3 dreadnoughts. Still no clue on what tray size. They are about 3" tall though so I could get another 3" and fit the predator sponsons/turrets in.
Exactly, the overflow of Rhino hulls as well as the Dreadnoughts and their extra bits should fit, if you have two trays for the Rhinos and One for the Dreads, but I would measure first. Again, the trays are about 13" X 7.5". If the torsos are magnetized to the legs, you could fit them in the 2" tray.
And about 40 infantry. 30 space marines, 7 scouts, Telion, and an HQ. About how many infantry can I fit in a single 1" tray?
I think this is too much to fit in a standard sabol case.
The Scouts would fit fine in a 1" tray lying down, but the regular Marines would probably fit better in 1.5" to 2" thick trays, depending on their poses and back banners and stuff. You would need to pluck out 4 squares for each miniature depending on weapons and pose. Each square is a half inch. Here's a program(
http://keallen.dyndns.org/warmachine/TransportPlanner.html) you can use to figure out how many squares you would have to pluck out based on the shape and size of the miniature, I would play with it and see what you come up with. Leave some extra room for future expansion, too.
The basic Transport comes with 2-1" trays and 6-2" trays plus their 1/4" tray covers, totalling about 14" of height. The trays for the Dreadnoughts and Rhinos will be 10" tall by themselves, you might have a tray or two left hanging outside it. The Batallion looks like what you want to get, it comes with all the trays you need plus just a few extra for just a few dollars more than the Basic Transport at thewarstore.
