It's all similar, but you'll have to experiment to see what works best for you. Some stuff does nothing, some stuff dissolves decals into paste. Depnends on the stuff and the decals.
Putting down decals takes some practice, and in some cases (over curves), they'll fight you hard (Marine shoulderpads never want to lay flat).
The basic idea is to get the decal as soft as possible (or as necessary) without having it start to break down and fall apart. Practice makes perfect in this pursuit.
I've been putting a lot of Imperial Fist logos on Marine shoulderpads lately. Here's what I do:
- Trim off as much of the clear backing as possible.
- Put some watered down solvent on the pad.
- Put down the decal, position it roughly, smooth it down as much as possible with a wet brush.
- Soak the decal with solvent, let it sit.
- After a few minutes, the decal will be all crinkled and horrible looking, but it will also be soft. With a wet brush, smooth it down.
- Keep smothing it down and dabbing on solvent until it's flat.
Not always perfect, but you can get pretty good results that way.
If you have bubbles in the middle of the decal, you should be able to push them out with a wet brush. If not, just let it dry, pierce it with the tip of a knife, hit it with more solvent, and it should clean up.
Decals will stick to glossier paint better.
