hey everyone. I've recently started on a project i want to do that hopefully will become a tutorial on here at some point. The idea is modular buildings. I've always liked the idea of cityfighting, but storing large buildings is difficult for anyone who doesnt have a dedicated gaming room. I usually just tape off a 6' by 4' area to play games on the floor with, but im usually restricted to using boxes and random stuff around the house to use as terrain. So I want to make modular buildings that i can assemble into whatever kind of building i want. To start i want to make a modular office building type thing. My main building material is Foam Boad (AKA foamcore). I get it in 30" by 20" by 3/16" sheets and cut the parts out and hot glue them together (I need to find a better way. thats messy and not too strong) My main issuel right now is, what kind of dimensions should i use for the building? I was thinking 12" by 12", but that seems a little small. I plan on stacking the floor modules anywhere from 2 to 8 high so it has to have a sort of skyscraper feel to it. So what would be a good dimension for the building?

I use a maximum of 8"x12" footprint for mine (this is because I use mdf 'placemats' to base mine, and they're this size. It allows me to place 9-10 pieces on a 6x4 table and it's a nice cityfight layout with streets/passageways and firelanes/cover without being too cluttered.

Helps with storing them, too.

Hmm i diddnt want to go any smaller than 12 by 12. i'll draw that out on some paper, see how it looks. the poll seems to be supporting 12 by 12 right now. maybe ill make some of different sizes? maybe some parts that convert one type to another (A part that lets me set 12 by 12s on top of 12 by 18s for instance). whats mdf btw? Also, does anyone ahve any ideas fpr a bonding medium thats better than hot glue? I've got a ton of the stuff, but i hate the strings it produces and its not too bondy.

All my buildings are on 12"x12" bases. For a bit of variety in my city layout, I have some bases that are 12"x24". Most of these larger bases are single, large buildings, though I also have a couple with multiple buildings on them.

MDF is "medium density fibreboard". Like a particleboard made from a finer sawdust and has an almost cardboard like feel. It is tougher than card, though, but not as tough as ply.

It is however, much cheaper than ply (unless you buy ply in bulk - and as I don't drive, and my nearest timberyeard doesn't deliver, that's an issue for me), and the added advantage is that it is already cut to size for a variety of shapes and things for the decoupage craft market.

I do all of my building and terrain with MDF bases.. its the best stuff to use.. you can even make ur terrain out of it.

Too many armies to count now.. mainly all 40k and AoS

Gives you cancer though. Use a mask is you're sawing it.

It's at least as bad as Asbestos.

Mine are roughly 12x12, some are 8x12, I have some that are even smaller, but these are really just terrain pieces, not proper buildings.

I do plan on making a massive one though, so go nuts!

Looks like 12 by 12 is the clear winner. hopefully i'll have pictures up soon-ish.
