The Primaris Psyker, this frail little fellow seems like an odd choice at first and he is, but like any frail old man in robes, you would be a fool to underestimate him.
For 70 points you get a 2 wound human with a space marine's WS and BS a Ld 9 a pistol and force weapon for a total of 4 attacks, 5 on the charge. When combined with counter-charge, rightous fury, or furious-charge, you get an crazy old coot yelling "Get off of my lawn!" with the staff skill of an Wu-tang clan monk, oh and his staff sucks souls if it connects. That said, it's best to keep him out of combat most of the time. With only 2 wounds and a 5+ invun, Gramps is just one slip and broken hip away from the old folks home, and he already has one foot in the grave. So go easy on the old man and only send him in all hell has broken loose and trees are peeing blood.Oh, he has frag grenades too, but if you are using them most of your planet has been consumed by Tyranids already. Who gave Gramps grenades anyways, somebody get them from him before he has a 'Nam flashback and kills himself, Lord knows he aint gonna kill anybody else.
Powers
Force Light- I mean Lighting arc. At first not much to look at, but like good ole gramps himself it's not to be underestimated. First off at Str6 it insta-kills t3 models. Eldar of both kind will be "shocked" (hur hur hur) to find this out. It's just the thing to fry a pesky command squad or some young whippersnapper vets aiming to get on your land and take down your tanks. Witch hunters who would be keen to put Grampa down or Daemon hunters who see him going crazy with his cane and think him possesed will also end up on the wrong side of Ole man Shocks-a-lot. At str6 you can also do some damage to light vechicles,They make too much noise and scare Grampa, and wake him up from his nap.
Remember it's only AP5 (he's only an old man) but it has 24' range and rolls 2d6 for hits and with his high bs(Bifocals rock!) you'll be able to fire away from his chimera or line squad. Remember if you let Pops drive the chimera, give him a wide bearth.
Nightshroud. Take a leadership test or don't shoot. Even works on tanks! Put in a large blob unit and use it to screen everything else behind it. If somebody shoots at his unit, gets through, and does too much ,go to ground and order his unit up next turn. FUN FACTS: Defilers and Soul-grinders are not fearless! I stopped a grinder from shooting twice one game, even daemons have hearts. Use in a chimera to spearhead a chimera assault. You'd be surprised how many hardened Marines and Necrons balk at Gunning down a little old man.
Avoid Commisars! These big hat wearing thugs love nothing more than pushing down old men when they mis-cast. "Ooooh you beat up Grampa, what a big man you are, Commisar D*^%-face, somebody give him a medal."
I hope this helps you choose the Grumpy old man, or atleast give him a try. He'll alway entertain with his senile antics!

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.
Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole |

Shouldnt this be in 'Tactics'?
I think that if you have a spare 70pts and your not going for some sort of commisar lord/conscript trick then a p.psyker is a good choice. Lots of high strength shots at a decent BS is pretty good, even if the AP is high. Nightshroud wont really help you out against most armies because Ld is still generally quite high. It can be useful occationally but certainly shouldnt be relied upon. A force weapon is a nice little benifit but at WS4 and S3 you will be lucky to get a wound against anything where it matters.
The problem occurs when you compare them to a CCS. In the same slot you get greater fire power, more wounds and game winning utility. It isnt worth not taking a CCS the vast majority of the time and if you have the points youll probably want to have 2.

taking up the mission
Polonius wrote:Well, seeing as I literally will die if I ever lose a game of 40k, I find your approach almost heretical. If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live? |

True on all counts, I'm just saying the guy isn't totaly useless. He can do a number on other guard armies, shootie orks and Tau. Chances are something is gonna fail a test. A CCS is still just a small group of guardsmen, while a PP can be deep in a 50man blob, where his leadership can help. Just give the guy a wirl before you make a judgement.
