Well GW sells modellig sand for basing.
But if you want an alternative I suggest talking to your local crafts shop or hardware store,or maybe even pet store.

I recently picked up some Woodland Scenics Ballast -- very fine. Works a charm. I mixed it in with some slate, and some tiny smahed pieces of filler to make a convincing rubble shaker that I can use for a lot of purposes, very quickly.

I use two items for basing. Ground cork and Playsand (the stuff for kids sandboxes.) Ground cork can be found in several good craft stores. For the playsand you can buy a 10lb. bag at any Home Depot/Lowes in the states for about US$5.00 approx. Or you can just go to a local landscape supply yard and ask them for a small container. Bring your own container and they will probably give it to you for free even. While there you can see other stuff that might be nice to have as well. Bark chips, other grades of stone, etc. And all of it can be had for free most of the time because they sell the stuff by the ton and you are looking for maybe a few pounds. I do not buy anything for bases anymore except the cork. I find or make everything else. Good luck.

*Sand - I steal this from roadworks
*Small stones - I tend to steal kitty litter, fish tank gravel or any other fine grade of gravel.

I use sand for cuts, it is cheap and the result its very good or a paste from Vallejo which when is dry looks like stone or sand according the paint that you use
Look the boyz and the warboss in my gallery, the ground it is with Vallejo paste
