I'm new to guard and was really liking the new sentinels, especially the armored sentinel with plasma cannon. So I was wondering: what setup do you have for them? Do you have any tips or tactics for using them?

In the shooting phase instead of firing a weapon I roll a d6 and move them up to that many inches.

Ok, just got back from the hobby store and played my first game with guard. It was a 1v1v1. Though I got steamrolled by a 10 nob squad with ALL the bells and whistles, the sentinel got assaulted, blew up and got passed the armor save and FNP save to actually wound a Nob. Overall, I want to keep using the armored sentinel with plasma cannon for now.

On a side note, Sly Marbo is now a staple in my army.

Questions about tactics for a unit should be posted in the 40K tactics forum.

How do I arm my Sentinels?

I don't. When competing with Devil Dogs/Hell Hounds and Valkyries/Vendettas for Fast Attack slot, Sentinels always come out second (or third actually).

Sentinels are a bit of weak choice in the new book, but if you want to take them, run them with multi-lasers. They're cheap, good against a broad range of enemies, provide that last bit of shooting that can often help, and can at least threaten transports. Plus with outflanking they can be a real pain.

Pity, I was really hoping you would say the plasma sentinels were a great option and that everyone should have some.

I dont really think of them in terms of 1 Sentinel in this case 1 = 3. Take this philosophy and just take them at their base rate.

9 STR 6 shots for 105 points that can outflank. Sure its actually 3 models but really thats the only way to play them.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

I run 5 in 1500points:
2x2 Multilaser
1 Lascannon

In my last game, the lascannon took out 2 Mega Nobz, and the ML Sents outflanked - one unit charged and wiped out a unit of lootas with SAG mek, while the other squad arrived too late to do much.

Scout Sents with Multilasers can be effective, a squadron of 3 will run you 105, outflank them and cause some havoc. You would be better off with a Vendetta, but if you do not have the Vendetta(s) or you are short on points, they are not a bad option.

Armored Sentinels with Multilasers are good at locking certain units in CC. At 55pts you are usually better off with a chimera, but if you can get a unit of BloodCrushers tied up then it is well worth it!

If Sentinels were 10pts cheaper, they would be very competitive. Sadly, the little guys still suffer from being 2nd string choices (perhaps even 3rd string).

I am enjoying the new armoured sentinels.

Not as a top notch gun platform, not as a super survivable tarpit, not as any one particular role at all. I find that they just come off as useful, as moving cover for expensive tanks, stop gaps for incoming non-dedicated assault units and every once and a while they hit something.

Mind you, I don't use them as part of my core, but when my list gets down to the last few hundred points, I start looking to fit a few in.

I've been running 2 armoured autocannons and I really like them. In the past I've used both multilaser and lascannon as well. I think that the multilaser belongs on outflanking Scout types, can't beat that for 105, IMO.

Play test with plasma cannon sentinels I dare ya? You will love them, and dont give me that point stuff you have to spend your points on something.
