I have to be truthful. When I first saw the dex, I was very disapointed in the executioner. I mean almost the cost of a land raidr for a Russ hull seemed really overpriced no matter how good the gun and sponsons were. However, I have to say that I was completely wrong. If you want a unit that will make your opponent just scoop up a squad a turn, there is no better tank. It is consistantly the top performer in any of my games. 5 plasma blasts a turn are just wrong, in so many ways that feel so good. What do you think Dakka?

(THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK)

I've thought it was ridiculously powerful from the moment I saw it. 5 mobile plasma canons on a FA 14 vehicle for 250 points is a pretty damn good buy.

Do you remember that time that thing happened?

Only 230 points for basic Executioner + plasma cannon sponsons. Don't forget rear armor 11 (seemingly minor boost that is vastly underrated).

I used a couple a few times in some test games. I found them to remarkably polar from game to game. One game a single volley from an executioner wiped out 8 members if a fortuned bike seer council. The game immediately following that I had one shoot, in a single shooting phase; itself, another executioner, a dreadnought, some guardsmen, a rhino, and a building. Now i realize those were extreme abberations; 5 dead on hits vs 5 scatters of 8"-9" but in my other games it seemed like they were just a little to variable to consistently make back their points. While tanks a third its cost were consistently making themselves far more useful. Overall I think the potential is there, its just about 20-30pts overpriced.

But it isnt 5 mobile blast markers is it, or have I missed something (always a possibility )?

On the move, it is 3 blasts from the main gun (always able to fire) and 1 sponson plasma cannon, right?

I think it's a brilliant tank, and it would be an absolute no-brainer at a lower price. I tracked how many wounds it inflicted in three games against a mechanized chaos player, and it was nearing triple digits. That's three squads of chaos marines every game. What else can do that?

Right, 5 blast templates if it stays still, 4 if you move it. Either way it is death on tracks. My last game mine accounted for, a squad of 5 destroyers in a single shooting phase, a squad of immortals, and a large chunck of a warrior squad. Considering that it spent two turns shaken/stunned and survived the game, I few this as great results.

Excellent, excellent tank.

Combat squads aren't combat squadding anymore... chaos players are hanging up plague marines and obliterators for rhinos with CSM...

And thanks to ordo malleus inquisitors next to executioners... demons are becoming

Hmmm, sheer plasma death
i like it.

not a guard player, nor do i have the dex, but by the sounds of it they are worth every point they cost.

just a few quick questions though

1: i guess these are 1 per HS choice :(
2: would 3 of them in a 2,000 point army be a tad too much?
3: see above, if not, would adding 9 plasma cannon sentinels to that be over the top?

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

1)You can have 3 per heavy support choice, but they have to be in a squad.

2)Well I guess not, depends on the rest of the army-190/230x3 for pure plasma death is not too much at 2k.

3)Plasma cannon sentinels are quite expensive at 75 a pop and also a little fragile (at least compared to the russ!). Probably better things to spend your points on imo, but if you love plasma cannons then why not lol.

The entire IG codex has me hoping I can go first, I used to love going second. Now the only chance I have is to go first and try and kill the tanks with Land speeder storms & Meltabombs scouts!

The executioner also doesn't suffer from one shot syndrome. Large blasts can be mitigated from spacing units out and leaving only about 3 or 4 guys max getting hit. If each small blast can clip at least two guys, the hits pile up quickly. It's pretty much guaranteed to put out a decent amount of hits per turn and won't have issues with having turns hitting nothing. Against bunched up units(usually units that just disembarked), its absolutely brutal. It only needs two good hits to decimate a bunched up unit. The extra 12" range is huge over the demolisher, although the lack of ID against T4 or 5 targets is a small drawback. It is pretty expensive and is only particularly effective against heavy infantry, but boy can it put out the hurt.

Loading up on plasma for Heavy Support (Executioners) and Fast Attack (Sentinels) would make a real mess of MEq armies. Add in lots of lascannon-toting infantry to take care of any heavy armour, and you would have a very hard-hitting army, could do well especially in a tourney setting?

Forever alone

Well, in response to that copypasta post, remember that Plague Marines have no save whatsoever against plasma cannons and Oblits have their crappy 5+ invulnerable save.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Mathhammering, I don't think an Executioner kills 1 rhino a turn if smoked. If you are playing anyone competitive the rhino wont even be on the table until turn 3.

So the PMs will be sitting pretty in their rhino. And yes they do get a save, 4+ cover when you finally manage to pop their rhino.

So no its not something PMs laugh at, but at most you see one Executioner in 17-1850 usually, and if its firing at the PMs the Oblits are firing crap up its butt.

The only part of that post that made sense was 'I don't think an executioner kills 1 rhino a turn if smoked." The rest is pretty wrongsauce.

I have 2 Execs in a couple of my rather competitive lists. I LOVE them. They're simply amazing tanks. The damage output is frightening, though they suffer against vehicles. If the rest of the list can pry units out of their transports, the Execs will boss proceedings against whatever infantry stumbles clear of the wreckages. With PC sponsons they're rather pricy at 230pts each, but one is generally enough.

And you're right, PMs don't laugh at Execs, they flat out DIAF without getting time to laugh. My lash list cries hard to Executioners, and it is pretty well updated to deal with the new IG book.
