Or in any other way immune to instant death? I realize of course that he's got T:6 but there are many weopons (i.e. talassarian tempest blade, rod of torment) that cause instant death regardless of T, so would the avatar be effected by that?

Maybe in the next edition Eternal Warrior will give a roll against Instant Death like Feel No Pain gives a roll against certain wounds.

Read the codex?
And... if that insightful little gem of wisdom doesn't help you...
As has been said... No Eternal Warrior. So, the trick is to keep your Avatar AWAY from those units that can Insta-kill it.

Somewhat ironic that a race chock full of psykers has a shard of god that is vulnerable to force weapons.

Not that ironic. The Avatars are the shards of a God that were thrown out of heaven and came to rest in the wraithbone cores of the Craftworlds. Between drawing on the ever-lasting power of the Warp during a major warp incursion and drawing on the psychic resources of a dwindling race, I'd say that the rules well represent the Avatar's disadvantages compared to other Greater Daemons.

I would love to see the Avatar get eternal Warrior. Or, a rule that lets him ignore any weapons that did not need a 3+ to wound. It doesn't make sense that the Living Avatar of a God could theoretically be murdered by something as silly as a lasgun

I'm sure there's a data sheet knocking about for the forge world version. I think he counts as a bio-titan WS10 BS5 S8 T8 W6 I6 A2D6 Ld10 Sv2+ / 3+ inv and his melta attack was range 24" St10 AP1 Heavy 4D6, melta ... and he cost about 500pts

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Ctan and Avatar of Khaine are just that. Borrowed body /shell .
An exarch sacrified to hold Khaine , a necrodermis shell for Ctans.
The dread Avatars of Khaine are the mere splinters of the ancient war god that can be called upon by a sacrifice of an Exarch who is chosen to be the Young King who are then absorbed by the essence, thus becoming the Avatar of Khaine wielding the might of the War God himself.
During the War in Heaven, Khaine fought and defeated the Nightbringer, shattering his necrodermis, although the resulting metal shards pierced his flesh, tainting his form with 'the aspect of the Reaper'. It is also said that this event precipitated the eventual fall of the Eldar: The Nightbringer planted the fear of death within all mortal creatures except the Orks, which furthered their survivalist emotions. In the depths of the warp, beings created during the turmoil of the War in Heaven would feast on these feelings and grow to sentience, setting into motion a chain of events that would close the Path of Rebirth for Eldar souls forever.

Never actually knew that, makes me want to get both Necron and Eldar codex's purely to read up on the backstory.

I am confused. I know that the Avatar can be instagibbed, but I thought that the C'tan had a special rule granting immunity to ID. Or, is it only specific ID weapons that C'tan are immune to?

No, the C'tan do not. The Toughness characteristic of both C'tan is too high to let them be killed by Strength that is double that number, but nothing exempts them from other Instant Death causing rules.
Interesting note: Gift of Chaos does not cause Instant Death, and cannot be saved against because it causes no wounds...

See, I get the bit about the Avatar not being a "full up" version of Khaine, but then he should't have all the vulnerabilities either. If he is bound to a physical shell then things that banish daemons should't work on him.
Likewise the argument against eternal warrior fails a bit when other purely flesh and blood characters (looking at you Calgar) get it with no reason other than they want to make them more powerful.
When the Eldar codex came out it was fine. Very few things had eternal warrior (IIRC the Eldar Codex introduced the rule for the phoenix lords). Now they hand it out like candy. In that respect the Avatar has been left behind.

If memory serves the Ctan have a special rule against wraithcannons, where they arent removed from play (old version) and instead take a wound. This is possibly where people think they have ID immunity.
Against Khans blade (ID on a 6) they should still be ID'd, same for other instagib weapons....
