The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. ------H.P.Lovecraft, Call of Cthulhu, 1926

Hi!

This is my very first post in this forum and the first ever in an non-german-speaking-forum too. I am 22years old and I started wargaming about 1997, when I was a innocent child and Dark Eldar had a brand new Codex I registered here because i was overhelmed by beutiful, all-models-converted armys, painted at a level i will properly never reach. But i'll try it.

My second passion after playing war with little but expensive Toysoldiers are the Storys of H.P. Lovecrafts. For those of you have never heard of Cthulhu and his friends go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovecraft

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos

I hope anyone knows what i'm talking about. I will (try) to build 40k army based around a Starspawn of Cthulhu, with his henchmen from Innsmouth and some other Lovecraft stuff, including Dark Youngs of Shub-Niggurath and so on. My idea is to use the Tyranid-Dex as army list and not the Chaosdaemons-dex. Why? Two reasons:

1. I want cultists! Daemons have no unit that seems weak enough!

2. I dislike the idea of having only my half army on the table at turn 1

My ideas for converting and count-as:

Starspawn of Cthulhu build out of a kitbash of Dragon/Carnifex/some tentacles (counts as winged Hivetyrant)

Innsmouth People build out of Fantasy Gouhls and Zombies count as termagaunts (any idea to make them look more "fishlike"?

The Hound/Nightgaunts (converted?) count as Winged Warriors

Deep Ones count as Genstealer including Father Dagon (Broodfirst)

I hope there are Lovecraft enthusiast out there who have some more Ideas. What could be a basic Model for deep ones? If anyone has some ideas please tell me. Pics are soon to follow!

greetings from Germany

ps: excuse my poor english!

thx for the replies!

@MeanGreenStompa: I already knew the page, but thanks anyway

The greates Problem is to make the army look like they're from the depths of a black and unknown sea. I never tried to use water on my base
Here some random inspirations and models. I hope everyone who is not familiar with the Cthulhu Mythos will see in wich directions my idea goes:

Cthulhu (Spawn)

Father Dagon

Deep ones

ps: Here is a picture of my converted Cthulhufex i build some years ago, actually i had the idea for a hole cthulhu army in a moment of madness after finding him in the last corner of my room

Maybe green stuff waves and such onto the base and then paint it blue to represent the sea.

One quick question how do I pronounce Cthulhu correctly?

there is no "right way" of pronouncing Cthulhu because this word is for non-human tongues. The only question is if you speak the "th" in an english style or not. I prefer it because Lovecraft was from Providence/USA.

You might also want to check out some of the Fishmen from Troll Forged Miniatures.

Kyte, the guy who made these models was also working on a Dagon like creature (creating entire regiments for them) if I'm not mistaken.

@malika2: Thx for the link!

I also ordered some Rafm Miniatures, look here:

http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RAF&Category_Code=COCMM

some look ridicilous but some are pretty nasty

@Scarecr0w14:

Lovecrafts hasn't wrote any books, there are just compilations of his shortstorys. My favourite ones are:

The Call of Cthulhu

The Outsider (all time fav!)

The Temple

The whisperer in Darkness

What means Pva?

As a little appetizer here is my Alien Tribute. Better Pics are soon to follow!

Got more views of those xenomorphs!

You might also want to check the Troll Forged forums, I know those guys there are crazy about Cthulu, whilst at the moment a little bit distracted with casting, trying to set his company up, taking care of his kid and helping every sculptor who wants it, the guy would probably be all fascinated with this idea!

Go to the source: http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0600031h.html

Much of the Lovecraft info out there, particularly the wiki stuff, tends to be second-hand "mythos" stuff rather than the original material and tends to miss out on what Lovecraft was actually writing about.

Those alien nids are fantastic!

You may have mentioned already but what did you use for the slime? some kind of crystal resin?

Thx for the nice replies! The Aliens are converted 2nd Edition Hormagaunts with arms from the old Genestealers. I removed the eyes and made some gs work on the backs and the "faces" (or the missing of it)
for the slime i glued just small pieces of fishing line on the models. Then i made some drops of normal Gw-varnish on them(wich i also used on the whole model). Thats all

The quenn is a nid-Warrior with different tail and much more gs.

I made them some time ago, and they serve my nid army as Genstealer with broodfirst. I also had the idea to build some facehugers out of Zombiehands....... Maybe i will find time for them one day.

I totally agree with you Nurglitch.

For those of you who want to go into the Cthulhu Mythos i found something interresting in the web

http://www.greylodge.org/gpc/?p=106

I think it is difficult to like Lovecraftstorys when you first read them. I myself didn't liked them the first time i read them. It's easier to listen to them first.

I'am really glad you like my Aliens! The converting was very simple and they look quite cool. The hardest thing was the mouth-in-a-mouth on the Queen. The tongue is basicly the head of a nid ripper. Today i will go to a open-air festival so await the first pictures of my converted deep ones in the next week!

One last shot for you! (Wip)

I had to idea (saying that its more than likely been used) of using Lizard men skinks as deep ones, with a bit of GSing of course

Here is my first test model. I'm not really happy with it. Of course, it is not really finished. (Base/greenstuff)

But the head looks simply to small..... also i think of giving them tridents instead spears or is this just silly?

What do you think?

Stick a shark head on that, and make them mini dagons, count mini dagons as gene stealers and just use regular skinks with no nostrils and extra fins as termagunts
