I just bought a command squad a few days ago and was eager to get some use out of it. Now, with sweet units like this, the hard core WYSIWYG enforcers always hate me. I can't help it, I want the models to look as bad as possible. One of my favorite figures, for example, is a devastators sergeant who's rocking a fist. Of course I'd never waste points on a fist in devastators, but he looks so awesome! But I digress... The point is I wanted to play my command squad as they were modeled at least once, which meant I spent a lot of points repping everything I tricked them out with. In a 1500 point army, my captain and his command squad took up just over 500 pts. And i don't think that includes the dedicated razorback I gave them. With a third of my points locked in 6 models I actually didn't expect myself to fare well. But last night I played friend with a Necron army that I had not managed to beat once yet. In fact I managed to make him phase. To be fair, a few thing went my way strategically, but my uber expensive HQ did not cripple me like I expected it to.

The only thing is, the C-Squad's role in the battle wound up being almost exclusively CC, which means a lot of points in guns weren't used. I like that the unit is pretty much going to be useful in any situation, but will the lack of specialization end up biting me? I'll list the details of the unit and their equipment. I'd love to get some opinions on whether it's cost effective or a waste of points.

Began the game in a dedicated Razorback with a twin-linked assault cannon and a storm bolter.

For those interested, the rest of my army consisted of 3 ten man tac-squads, two with a lascannon and meltagun, 1 with a plasma cannon and flamer; 5 assault marines, the sergeant with a power weapon and, and a Dreadnought with an assault cannon and a twin linked autocannon. I think the total came to 1498.

Oh yeah, game type was capture and control and deployment was the standard 12'' from your edge.

My HQ usually wins games for me. That being said, you don't really have a whole lot of points wrapped up on shooty. Mixing the combi-melta in there is a bit odd, but having that extra versatility there to pop a transport and eat the tasty bits inside could be worth it. The plasmagun, not being assault, is really the only thing I can see that you wouldn't really use all that often.

Captain- Digital Weapons may be unneccesary, you already wound most on two's. I'd prolly drop Artificer Armor, FnP should keep you fairly well protected from small arms fire.

Veteran A- Drop the Storm Bolter, the Power Weapon, and the Storm Shield. The Storm Bolter doesn't really give much benefit, and you have plenty of Power Weapons in there already.

Veteran B- Drop the Gun.

Veteran C- See A. I'd maybe think about giving this one and A Melta's or Combi-meltas.

I'd maybe think about dropping the Razorback and trying to fit in bikes for these guys.
