Just was curious if my chaos Havoc (Champion) can have the ICON instead of one of my other units which most likely will be taken off first if they are killed...??

Is the Icon in the champion's available wargear list? I.E. The Champion may be equipped with an Icon at the following points cost: blah blah blah.

It says "one model".

It is not listed in the Champion's wargear, so I would say no.

Is the champion not "one model" in the squad?

True, however, does it not list separate wargear for the champion? If that's the case, then the options purchasable for the squad do not apply to the champion.

By that reasoning the havocs would also be unable to take the icon, making the entire statement pointless.

QFT

There is nothing to suggest that the Champion is not one of the models in the squad.

The chaos havoc squad has 3 wargear sections. Wargear for the character, wargear for the squad and icons for the unit. Page 100 CSM codex.

Character "One model may be upgraded to an aspiring champion...." "He may have xxx for xxpts"

Icons "One model may be given one of the following icons...."

Options "Up to four havocs may replace their bolter with one of the following..."

One model is upgraded from a "choas havoc" to an "aspiring champion" with a different statline. He is no longer a havoc and no longer is elligible for the wargear from the Options section. ("Up to four havocs may replace...)

However an icon can be assigned to any one model and does not specify if it is a havoc or asp champ that may take it, unlike the "Options" and "Character" sections. Being as both Chaos Havocs and Aspiring Champions are models from the purchased unit, then either may take the icon.

"One Model" in the squad may carry the icon. "Up to four havocs" may carry a heavy weapon. The aspiring champion can also take certain items. He is clearly a model that is part of the squad, and so can take the Icon. However he cannot take heavy weapons because he is not a Havoc, he is an Aspiring Champion.

Always 1 on the crazed roll.

Agreed, any model (including the Champion) can take the Icon. Not being allowed to give Champions the unit's options would make Chosen Champions kinda useless, since they don't have their own weapons options.

I have most of my icons on my unit champions. I clearly point out which icons are which at the beginning of the game. No opponent yet has had a problem with this.

I might also refer this discussion to the chaos terminator selection, where ONE model may have an icon, and ANY model may be a champion. If you made all the models in your unit champions, then by defalt a champion would have the icon, unavoidable.
