Hey,

Has anyone had any experience growing a chilli plant and then having the chillies not be spicy at all?

I mean they look good, but they have absolutely no zing.

I got this ornamental chilli plant because they have the tiniest hottest chilli's, but so far mine's a dud.

Is there anything that you can do to bring spice into my life ?

Use radioactive waste, then you get giant mutated chillis.

My dad used to grow Jalapeno plants. He would pick them, then let them dry. Once they dried they would turn from green to bright red. One taste was death to my tongue. Other than that I can give no advice.

@Beefyg :

If im not mistaken , the chili's hotness comes from their seeds. Does yours have them yet?

For example , i can eat a jalapeno pepper ,
but if i bite on one of the seed ( seed is small but deadly ) of the the one in the pic , my tongue goes numb , and mouth goes on fire .

Yeah, it's the seeds that do it. I can tolerate a chili provided I carefully chew it, but if you bite a seed, God help you.

Ambient temperatures have a huge effect on the plant's growth and the heat the fruit generates.

I grew some White Habaneros (look like little ORANGE capsicums [Bell peppers to yanks]) but burn like nothing else (world's hottest chilli, too) years ago. Gave my plants to a mate who continued to grow them up in the Springwood NSW area (lower Blue Mountains - halfway between Sydney and Katoomba) - which is not reknowned for being hot.

Most of them had frost protection (it was like a little skirt/curtain, made of open topped clear plastic tubes, that you filled with water. the sun heated them during the day, and they kept the warmth in), but a few didn't - these had about as much heat as a poblano (real mild).

Never had to worry about anti-bug measures, either. The few caterpillars that did munch on them, died (and I'd only lose one fruit per shrub (maybe 1 in 20), but there is some literature that plants communicate with each other with regards to insect pests, encouraging themselves to boost potency.
