well there are 3 main builds and your friend would have to decide how they want to go.

1 - all asari (elf)
2 - all forest spirits
3 - mixed.

general consensus is that mixed is the best. I´ll give a quick overview of all the characters. note it´s from my point of view so biased towards my playing style. FYI i play a very fast mobile army list designed to outmanouver the enemy and attack from the side. this way I pick and choose my battles and don´t loose combat unless if something freaky happens or I want to.

characters
lords
treeman ancient. I always run this guy. big, tough, stubborn. what more can you want. he can act as a hammer or anvil. has LD9 which is still pretty good plus has access to spites. only disadvantage is he also takes up a rare slot

Highborn don´t take the highborn much but if the ancient wasn´t there then I would. he´s an elf but he has LD10 and can be taken on a dragon. If you put him on a dragon give him combat items. if you put him on foot then the bow of lorien is usually a good choice as he gets 4S4 shots per turn hitting on 2+

magelord. never take this as i don´t want to go magic heavy with my elves (i play Tomb Kings and magic skaven so didn´t want to focus on thiis).

Heroes
spellsinger. usually take one as a scroll caddie. pretty basic can treesing which is very useful

noble. usually take 1 or 2 of these. can be used as BSB in a two treeman army. I like giving him a GW and putting him on foot in a unit of wardancers. then give him hail of doom arrow and helm of the hunt.

branchwraith. these are good but i just think nobles are more useful and versatile. Plus my ancient takes all the good spites.

Troops
Core
glade guard - excellent. I use 2*10 and use them to get rid of rank bonus´ so i have a better chance in combat. can turn them into scouts as well but i prefer waywatchers
glade riders - good harrasing unit and flanker. not strong but very useful as they can bait the enemy
dryads - overall very solid skirmishers. usually take 2*8
Eternal guard - never take these but there is a good army with them. don´t have the time to describe it but it is a matter of taking them in 1 big unit with a couple of smaller ones to support and being stubborn with a re-roll thanks to the BSB. not even sure if they are core or special sorry.

special
wardancers - love em. can take on lightly armoured units with +1 attack or heavily armoured units with killing blow. only thing i think they can´t take on is heavily armoued ranked units (saurus, chaos warriors). flanks become another story though depending on the number of ranks. usually take in units of 7
wild riders - I like a unit of 5/6. good for flanking and wiping out supporting units
warhawk riders - not bad but wild riderss and glade riders can probably do a simmilar thing
treekein - don´t like them. I play a fast WE army so they are just too slow for my liking

rare
treeman - i prefer to run him as an ancient. for 25pts you have the option to take spites and +1 leadership.
waywatchers - i like these guys. usually deploy them to slow the opponents approach down.
giant eagle - i like this guy but prefer the waywatchers and treeman too much.

They are Special choices that only become Core if your general is a Highborne. Also, they are
Stubborn when there is a Noble or Highborne in the unit.

For me this is all about the eagle since I don't like the Treeman model I have painted.

Ill have to agree with malf here

Treemen - hard hitting solid unit, but alas, not the be all and end all.

Waywatchers - weak unit, they tend to die to firepower or magic, and they are pretty heavy on points for wat they can do.

Giant eagle - allways take atleast 1 of them.
Blocking march moves is great, also gives movement for taking out war machine crew.
By blocking march moves it gives you even more movement, which is a key point to wood elves.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

How does the Bow of Loren on a Highborn give S4 attacks. As far as i can tell, it gives him 4 shots ( # of atks. on his profile) but no strength bonus. It's just a regular bow shot, eh? I dont have my codex in front of me. But I give my Highborn this magic item and if I'm doing something wrong I'd like to know. S4 bow shots from him would be awesome!!

The Bow of Loren shoots at Str3, but you can combine it on a Highborn with the magical arrows:

-Hagbane Arrows: Cause a toughness test if a multi-wound model is wounded by it. Kinda' stinks because most multi-wound models have high T.

-Starfire Arrows: Cause panic check on unit that takes a wound from it. Great against beastmen and goblins, maybe even Ogres if you can get a wound off.

-Arcane Bodkins: Negates armor saves. Great against Empire, Brettonian, Wood Elf, Dark Elf and High Elf cavalry. The standard "Machine Gun Alter" is the following:
Highborn, Alter Kindred, Arcane Bodkins, Bow of Loren and some kind of ward save then great wep and some armor.

This one can be fun becuase he's fast, hits hard and has 5 shots with his bow. Problem is he can't be the general or hide in a unit, but I run him anyway.

regarding the bow of lorien sorry it is only S3. as i said i usually use the ancient and was thinking of the previous rulebook (yes it was a while ago) which gave a strength bonus as well.
