One of the projects that I have challenged myself with is a bunker for my sons army, somthing that he can use in almost any terrain, and that would give a base of operations for small battles.

I searched alot of ideas on the internet, and found several concepts I liked, and took ideas from each.

Given the limited resources (being very broke), I decided to use the following items as the base for creating the model.

1) 5mm Foam-Core
2) Poster Board
3) Masking Tape (we had it laying around the house)
4) Dry wall spackle (again, another item we had in the house)
5) Straight Pins (Figured they would make easy rivits)
6) PVC Glue

Here are some photos of the basic build phase one. Between cutting the pieces and building the framework, it took about 6 hours at this point.

The foam core was pinned into place with the strait pins, which would give it a little stability while the glue was drying.

One the PVC glue dried, I used the dry wall spackle (the same kind used for filling nail holes in walls) to smooth out the corners and add some texture to the foam core. I wanted it to look like poured or formed concrete.

I also took several pieced of masking tape, and stuck them to pices of poster board (card stock). These would be added armor plates. Which I would push the stright pins thru and clip them short, for the rivits.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was not sure how I was going to get texture or what would be the easiest way to give it an industrial look. I ended up taking the spackle and rubbing the foam-core with it, letting it stick and dry randomly on the surface, as well as packing it into the edges to fill the seams.

I decided that all the major exterior joint on the lower half would be rounded while the upper portion would be flat (Mainly cause the lower half was a pain in the butt).

With the major construction complete, it was time to begin base coating the model. I chose the following colors to give it the typical militant look, with a little twist on the additional armor:

1) Base coat - Adeptus Battle Grey
2) Armor - Dwarf Bronze
3) Wash - Thinned Badab Black (2 coats)

Okay, I think I am ready to mount and base this project....just need the supplies now!

I have completed the dry brush and detailing, and here is the methods I used:

ARMOR - Dwarf Bronze, two coats of Badab Black, and dry brushed with Dwarf Bronze again.

CONCRETE - Adeptus Battle Grey, two washes of Badab Black, dry brushed with Adeptus Battle Grey, than Codex Grey.

RIVITS - Bolt gun with Highlights of Chainmail and then Mitral Silver.

RUST - (Very Thin, almost water) Two thin coats of the following in order - Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown, Fiery Orange, 50/50 Fiery Orange - Vomit Brown, Vomit Brown, 75/25 Vomit Brown-Sunburst Yellow.

COAT OF ARMS - Mordian Blue, wash of badad black, Mordian Blue, Ultra Marine Blue, 50/50 Ultramarine Blue-Ice Blue.

Some of the detailing:

KEY PADS / EXIT SIGN - I found stock photos online, and shrunk them down in PowerPoint. Printing them on a laser printer, to ensure the ink would not run, than taping three layers of tape to the back. Glues in place, and than I coated them with a thinned wash of PVC glue to seal them.

ROPE - One small nail, and some thin string. I coiled the rope and taped it in a small bundle. Once I had the desired look, I dipped the entire piece in thinned PVC glue. Once dried and hard, using a drop of super-glue, I attached another short length of string to coil around the rope. Again, more thinned PVC glue. I finished it with Khermi Browm, a wash of Badab Black, wash of Gryphon Sepia, and then dry brushed with Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown and 50/50 Beastial brown-Vomit Brown.

ROOF - Cross-Stitch board, which I painted with Choas Black, than dry Brushed with Boltgun, than Chiainmail, highlighted with Mithral.

Here is the interior view, showing the exit sign, the Rope and a pile of supplies (removable).

SUPPLIES - The supplies I made, again from scratch, using simple items. Sculpting a barrel, ammo crate and fuel can out of Crayola Fun Clay (we had some left over from a school project), toothpicks of verious types and sizes, as well as different straws the scrap metal stack. The tarp was made by dipping a piece of brown paper bag into thinned PVC Glue.

The Metals were painted usinging:
Blotgun - Dwarf Bronze - Shining Gold, which were than washed twice with badab black, and than dry brushed with the original color.

The Tarp was based in Khermi Brown, than two coats of Badab Black. Once dry, I dry brushed it again with Khermi brown, than 50/50 Khermi Brown and Snot Green, and than highlights of 75/25 Snot Green and Khermi Brown.

Wow, that bunker looks great! The whole thing looks amazingly quick and easy to put together, too!
Just a question though, what are the metal paneling on the outside, it looks like painted tin foil, but
I wanna know!

GRANESH - The actual metal plating was nothing more that some poster board with three or four layers of masking tape stuck to the back. After they were cut to size I crumpled them up, than flatened them out to show wear, or added bullet holes etc.

The basic painting was Dwarf Bronze, Wash of Badab Black, than dry bruch Dwarf Bronze.

VODSKI - Well the cost was cheaper than buying an exsisting model.

Foam Core -$12.00
Spackle - $3.00
Cross Stitch Board - $1.00
Straight Pins - $2.00

Paint from other projects, so everything under $20.00

Here is the build plan I used....

I have another plan that I am using for another imperial bunker...but it is slow going as I am teaching a friends kid along with my son. The other kid has to get his grades up before we finish!

Both you guys have great building designs! RickC gets my preference only because his template is simpler to make, but I think that spartanghost's modular buildings have more playability due to the customization factor. Good work to the both of you.

Elliotminorkid - Thanks for the comment.

Cardboard, plasticard, paper it is all good. The quality of the terrain is cool, but it is the armies in motion that make the game.

I might have a cool looking bunker, but I am still trying to get a handle on the play and tactic.

Again, thanks.
