So. First tourney with Daemons is coming up.

I plan on running:
4x Herald of Khorne: Strength, Chariot.
4x Crushers.
3x Flamer.
5x Fiends: Strenght.
3x7 Horrors: Bolt. Changeling.
2x10 Bearers.
3x Phlegmgrinder.

I plan on playing offensive/defensive waves. ie; all threats in my good half.

I've played one game with my Daemons and lost my Flamers to mishap.

I'm thinking I may need 1-2 icons in the bearers to give me a safe zone in a cluttered battlefield. Probably just in my bad wave to help my threats. Troops don't need it and you can't use it turn one.

But yeah. What are your opinions on icon people?

Boon or a waste of 25pts?

Honestly icons buy peace of mind, when putting in all DS troops you really should minimize the risk involved...

Ok, I'll add some. Or at least one.

So Daemonic Assault tactics.

Am I dividing my army the correct way?

ie; Threat Overload/Saturation and Defensive? Of course it'd be tailored to whatever is stronger against the enemy army.

Like..

3 Grinders, Fiends, Crushers, 2 Heralds, Flamers.
vs
2 Heralds, 3 Horrors, 2 Bearers?

Because if you go 50/50 you literally have half your army vs. your opponent's whole army.

I'm also thinking that 1-2 Icons in the Bearers is probably best.

Like.

Primary wave can't use them opening turn and secondary wave is just support/defensive so they don't really need them.

However, the Primary wave is full of threats and if I roll crap then I need to make sure they show up where I need them.

Sound like solid theory?

The two Plague Bearer packs, one in each wave, should have icons.
You can't afford to loose your packs due to bad scatter.

Bloodcrushers are a good place for icons too, as not only do you get icons, but you get the opportunity to spread wounds around.

Yes, you are doing it correctly. I'm not in agreement on all your list choices, but that's good, means we don't have identical lists.

The way to do Daemons is: Threats first wave, scoring units second.

I usually find its worthwhile to include one or two Icons, but in the second wave. If you get your preferred half you don't need Icons, they are only for the times when you roll the dreaded one/two.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

That's what I wanted to hear.

So I'm going to include a single Icon.

Heh.

.... and what's wrong with my list?

4x HoK: Chariot, Might.
4x Crushers.
3x Flamers.
5x Fiends.
3x 7 Horrors, Bolt, Changeling.
11x Bearers, Icon.
8x Bearers.
3x Phlegmgrinders.

pesonally i find two MC's better value than 4 Heralds, more offensive punch and tend to live longer - also that way, you drop 2 MC's + 3 SG's in a wve. Suddenly anything below S4 is pretty pointless, and you go to town.

I was going to go the 2 monster path, but decided the points value is too prohibitive.

400 for 4 Heralds is pretty good.

They're WS6, S6 (S7 on the charge), A4 powered attacks, T5 with a 3+/5++ and 4 wounds. Good value imho.

Personally, I never use icons. I've tried them on occasion, and they were nice, but not so overwhelming that it mattered that much. Then again, my list is fairly different than what you've posted. In my 1500 I run Fateweaver, 3 suicide squads of flamers, 2 squads of 10 horrors, 2 squads of 10 bloodletters, and 3 squads of 4 screamers. The way I run it is I try not to land too close with anything except the flamers. If I lose a squad it's only 105 pts, if I hit right, or right enough, I typically remove a opponents squad from the board. Horrors have a decent enough range that I drop them about 9" out. I try to make sure fateweaver is nearby enough that they get to reroll their invulnerable saves. I also don't pre select my waves. I wait till right before I roll for halves to choose which is in which half. It keeps me from locking myself into a particular method of though on how I should play, and, it allows me to better respond to what I may be facing by opponent, their army, and deployment. Facing drop guard in 4th I wanted my tzeentch on the table first, better saves against all the dropping plasma, demo charges, etc. Against mechanized tau I wanted my screamers on the table asap..

As for deep strike ranges.

You'd generally deepstrike about 9" from the enemy and the same from other troops/terrain/etc?

Varies, for some of my units I go closer to 14 inches, while for my flamers I go about 1.5 inches away from the enemy unit.

I'm assuming Changeling triggers once per phase?

Icons seem like a waste to me at 25 points. Most of the boards i play on have very little or no impassible terrain so the only chance of a mishap comes with scattering into units. I don't like feeling like i have to DS next to icons, i like the total board control you get with deepstriking. The icons don't do anything for the first wave anyway. I'm typically responding to enemy moves with my second wave or taking objectives which i wouldn't need to take if i already had an icon bearer sitting on it.

What makes you assume that?

the way i read it... every time a unit shoots in his range, take that test.
